In the former Arrowverse television universe on The CW (which launched in 2012), many actors were involved. One of these actors revealed their preferred costume from among the various interconnected superhero shows that made up this universe, such as Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman, and Superman & Lois.
Among the prominent stars gracing the Arrowverse are Stephen Amell, who plays Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, Grant Gustin as Barry Allen/The Flash, Melissa Benoist portraying Kara Danvers/Supergirl, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance/White Canary, Tyler Hoechlin in his role as Clark Kent/Superman, and Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning. One of these characters shared their preferred superhero costume following their stints in various superhero productions.
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been captivated by Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of Superman across various Arrowverse projects. Making his entrance in Season 2’s premiere of Supergirl, he graced our screens during the “Elseworlds” crossover in The Flash (2018) and Arrow (2018), and reappeared in the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover in Batwoman (2018) and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (2020). His own series, Superman & Lois, premiered in 2021. After donning different Superman costumes throughout these shows, Hoechlin revealed his preferred suit: “The Fleischer suit was the most comfortable. It had the most flexibility, allowing for more movement,” he shared with The Popverse. His co-star Bitsie Tulloch added, “It was also the cutest.
Tyler Hoechlin donned six distinct Superman costumes across the Arrowverse. However, the suit under discussion was the one worn during flashback sequences in “Superman & Lois” Season 1, Episode 1, titled “Pilot.” This scene showcased Clark Kent’s initial days as Superman, when he was still learning to navigate his superhero role. Known as the Fleischer Suit, it was modeled after the iconic Superman costume inspired by the 1940s Fleischer Studio’s animated Superman shorts. The suit showcases a black and red “S” emblem, a brighter blue fabric, and a vintage design reminiscent of Superman’s comic book and animation costumes. Hoechlin and Tullock shared nostalgic moments as they reminisced about the scene where Superman rescued a young boy from a falling car. “Additionally, that scene was impressive, with the green car,” Tulloch added. “The car, I believe it was a Cruiser in our version. That scene, our flashback scenes involving Atom-Man and more, I truly enjoyed. Whenever I see that suit in the costume room, I feel it’s a great day,” Hoechlin expressed. This scene paid homage to the cover of Action Comics #1, marking Superman’s debut.
In every iteration of the Superman franchise, the costume has consistently held significance. Though its design may evolve, the meticulousness in its creation remains constant. Director James Gunn, who helms the upcoming Superman movie featuring David Corenswet, previously confided that he reached out to Zack Snyder regarding Superman’s iconic red trunks as he felt they were too vibrant. Snyder confessed that he experimented extensively with various designs but couldn’t find one that met his aesthetic preferences, thus abandoning them in Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel. However, Gunn opted to reinstate the red briefs after listening to Corenswet’s perspective. “I’m an extraterrestrial who can fly and lift buildings, and I project destructive laser beams from my eyes. I want children not to fear me. So what should I wear?” expressed Corenswet. As for Hoechlin’s preference, it is unsurprising that after donning numerous costumes, he favored the most comfortable one, considering comfort is crucial for actors during filming to deliver their best performances.
Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
