As a Mercy Main in Overwatch, I’d Like to Personally Apologize For Season 1

The recent Overwatch presentation was a huge surprise, even for long-time fans like myself. While many predicted three new heroes for 2026, Blizzard went above and beyond, announcing five heroes launching with Season 1 on February 10th, and a total of ten throughout the year. They also brought back fan favorites like animated shorts and hero cards, and promised bigger events and a continuing story that will unfold across Seasons. There’s a lot to be excited about! However, some fans still have a few concerns.

It’s frustrating that my favorite character, Mercy, is caught up in the recent backlash, and honestly, even as a big fan, I see the point people are making. Beyond issues with how Anran’s in-game model looks compared to the teasers, and some players disliking the new menu design, many are upset that Mercy is getting another Mythic skin when so many other heroes – like Ramattra and especially Lucio, who have been waiting for a long time – haven’t received one yet. Despite all this, I can’t help but be excited for Mercy’s new skin, and I apologize if that bothers anyone.

Okay, I’m really excited that Ramattra is finally getting a dance emote, and Lucio’s new Kerropi skin from the Hello Kitty collab looks amazing! But honestly, it feels a little like a small peace offering, you know? Especially when Mercy is getting so many skins – her Hello Kitty skin based on Pompompurin is just the latest. It’s great for Mercy mains, but as a Ramattra or Lucio fan, it’s hard not to feel a little left out!

Why Lucio Mains Are Particularly Devastated About the Season 1 Mythic News

It’s disappointing when a hero you play doesn’t get a special Mythic skin, but Lucio’s fans feel particularly frustrated. It seems like Blizzard has been intentionally teasing them with near misses. Here are some examples of what they’re talking about:

  • Prior to Lifeweaver’s Mythic being revealed for Overwatch 2 Season 19, the social media accounts made several references to Lucio, which ultimately led to nothing.
  • Lucio was clearly the inspiration for the latest Overwatch competitive drives, leading many to hope that he’d finally be next in line for a Mythic.
  • An official short video from Blizzard showing off Mercy’s new skin sees Lucio watching on in disgust, saying, “you believe that? I don’t even know what to tell you…” before walking off in disgust.

It’s obvious Blizzard knows players really want a special Mythic skin for Lucio in Overwatch, but they haven’t released one yet. Sadly for Lucio fans, it doesn’t look like one is coming for several months. During a recent stream, Blizzard confirmed Mei will get a Mythic skin mid-season, and announced the next three will go to Soldier: 76, Illari, and Mauga. This means Lucio won’t have a chance at a Mythic skin until the middle of Season 3. He’s also not getting any of the new Mythic weapons either – those are planned for Juno, Genji, Hanzo, and Sojourn.

It’s particularly odd that Lucio hasn’t received a Mythic skin yet. He’s been a character in Overwatch since the very beginning, and most of the original launch characters now have one (12 out of 21), with two more getting them soon. Of the few remaining original characters who don’t have a Mythic skin – Lucio, Pharah, Roadhog, Bastion, Torbjorn, Symmetra, and Winston – Lucio is arguably the most popular. He has a dedicated and skilled player base who actively share advanced techniques, and they’re really hoping for a Mythic skin for him. While it’s understandable that newer characters might get them first, it feels especially strange for one of Blizzard’s favored heroes to receive a second Mythic skin while a long-time character like Lucio is still waiting.

As a Mercy Main, I’m Both Guilty and Excited For Season 1

I can understand why Lucio players might be frustrated if they feel targeted by teammates in Overwatch Season 1, especially since Mercy consistently receives a lot of attention. She’s clearly a popular character that Blizzard invests in, which means others sometimes get overlooked, like Baptiste and Winston. Now, that focus has extended to her new Mythic skin, and it’s easy to see why players who don’t use Mercy are annoyed. I definitely sympathize with that feeling, but honestly, I’m still planning to quickly complete the battle pass just to unlock it myself.

Mercy’s new mythic skin, Celestial Guardian, is absolutely stunning. It gives Angela Ziegler a beautiful, shimmering outfit and large, fluffy wings—a big departure from her usual futuristic design. Even her hero selection screen shows her dramatically appearing from behind these wings. Players can customize the wings with other equally impressive feathery styles at Tier 2. She also gains smaller wings around her head and a glowing halo, with options for light blue or red color schemes at Tier 3. The skin features appropriately dazzling visual effects for her weapon and resurrection ability, and at max level, players will notice glowing feathers and other subtle details surrounding her.

I really enjoyed Mercy’s first Mythic skin, which transformed her into a dark, almost villainous angel. While it wasn’t universally loved, it was a cool concept. This new skin is a fantastic addition for Mercy players who appreciate visually appealing designs – and considering most of her skins are beautiful, I suspect there are a lot of them! I’d rate it a 9 out of 10. My only minor complaint is the hairstyle; I wish there were some other options. But overall, it’s stunning. I’m excited to add it to my already extensive Mercy skin collection, which is a little embarrassing to admit! While I think other heroes might have deserved this season’s Mythic skin more, I definitely won’t be giving this one up now that it’s here.

Blizzard’s playful teasing with the new Mercy skin is amusing, but fans are hoping it means Lucio will get a Mythic skin soon. Giving two Mythic skins per character feels unfair until all the original heroes have at least one. There’s concern that Kiriko, who already has a Mythic skin, might get another one quickly, which would likely cause similar frustration. Ideally, the new Mercy skin was a special case – a really great idea that won’t set a precedent. Lucio players have been waiting a long time for some recognition, and it would be hard to bear if Kiriko got another skin before him. As a Mercy player accustomed to getting nice things, I know I wouldn’t be happy with that situation.
