Streamer Asmongold on Twitch openly expressed his stance that he wouldn’t ban individuals from the platform unless their actions violate the law. The policy regarding bans on Twitch has been a topic of ongoing discussion, as some believe the rules are enforced unevenly based on the popularity of streamers, or instances occur where banned users should not have been, and vice versa.

The platform owned by Amazon frequently adjusts its terms of service and ban policy, making minor modifications. For instance, Twitch declared in September 2024 that it would provide clearer explanations when suspending streamers, specifying the exact instances of inappropriate behavior. Earlier, banned content creators often lacked clarity about the specific reasons for their punishment, potentially leading them to unknowingly repeat the same mistake.

According to influencer Asmongold, he believes that Twitch users should only be banned if they’ve committed an actual crime. Instead of enforcing rules based on individual interpretations or perceived infractions, he suggests that only illegal actions lead to a ban. From his viewpoint, this stance is driven by a commitment to free speech. Asmongold also mentioned that controversial streamers, like Destiny, Sneako, and Fresh& Fit, who exhibited questionable conduct or promoted toxic environments, would not have been banned under this approach.

If Free Speech Were Considered, Many Channels Wouldn’t Be Banned, Says Asmongold

Since March 2022, Destiny has been permanently banned from Twitch due to three primary reasons: using chat to propagate derogatory comments based on race, expressing support or praise for hate crimes, and advocating for the exclusion of people with disabilities. In September 2024, The Fresh & Fit podcast was abruptly taken down from Twitch during a live stream that many perceived as misogynistic. Sneako received a permanent ban in October for disseminating false information regarding COVID vaccines and the U.S. election.

Recently, Asmongold was temporarily banned for statements considered controversial by Twitch. He speculates that none of the named individuals will be reinstated since they undeniably breached Twitch’s Terms of Service. The platform’s guidelines extend beyond just legal matters, and in his opinion, Sneako and Fresh&Fit should have never been reinstated given their questionable content.

The strict ban policy of the company might be softening up soon, some believe, following updates to Twitch’s ban policy in February. This update includes setting expiration dates for bans, with minor offenses disappearing after 90 days and more severe violations vanishing after a year or so. Moreover, permanent bans are no longer lifetime restrictions, as content creators can now petition for reinstatement six months after the ban.
