The knights in Game of Thrones are some of the most famous and skilled warriors in the history of the realm. They bravely fought for their rulers, protecting the throne and sometimes standing up for what was right. While most knights served lords and ladies, a few, like Ser Duncan the Tall in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, were driven by a desire to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves.
Ser Duncan the Tall is a truly honorable man, but he’s not the most skilled warrior in the world of Game of Thrones. Many knights, like the legendary Ser Barristan Selmy, Ser Arthur Dayne, and Ser Jorah Mormont, are far more experienced and capable than he is, based on how he’s shown in HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Ser Jaime Lannister
Goldenhand the Just
Jaime Lannister is a celebrated knight, but his reputation is often overshadowed by the fact that he killed his king. While many know him as the ‘Kingslayer,’ many others remember him as the hero who stopped the Mad King from destroying King’s Landing with wildfire.
Jaime showed remarkable fighting ability from a young age, becoming the Kingsguard’s youngest-ever member. Throughout Game of Thrones, he consistently demonstrated his skill, and with the training he received, he would easily win against Ser Duncan as he is now.
Ser Loras Tyrell
The Knight of Flowers
Ser Loras Tyrell, known as the Knight of the Flowers, was a highly skilled jouster in Game of Thrones. He was a true champion in tournaments, admired for his honorable fighting style, impressive skill, and ability to entertain the crowds.
In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Ser Duncan the Tall isn’t as skilled as Ser Loras. Loras is a more polished jouster, easily surpassing Duncan with his technique and ability.
Ser Brienne of Tarth
Brienne the Blue
Lady Brienne, a relative of the legendary Ser Duncan the Tall, was made a knight by Jaime Lannister, who praised her abilities and named her “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” She bravely fought in the Battle of Winterfell and eventually became Lord Commander. Throughout Game of Thrones, she loyally served many important figures, including Renly Baratheon, Catelyn Stark, and Sansa Stark.
Brienne is a tall and impressive warrior, remarkably skilled with a sword. Few can match her power and ability, not even the experienced Ser Duncan at his current level.
Ser Barristan Selmy
Barristan the Bold
Barristan Selmy was a highly respected and courageous knight who served as a Kingsguard for several kings, eventually dying while protecting his queen. His remarkable career began at a young age; at sixteen, he competed in a tourney in King’s Landing as an anonymous knight and defeated both Prince Duncan Targaryen and Ser Duncan the Tall. King Aegon V was so impressed that he knighted him on the spot. Barristan proved to be an exceptional warrior, notably fighting in the War of the Ninepenny Kings while serving the Targaryens, where he personally killed Maelys I Blackfyre.
Ser Barristan served the king who later became known as the Mad King. After the rebellion led by Robert Baratheon, Baratheon spared Barristan’s life and appointed him Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. In the show Game of Thrones, Joffrey publicly fired Barristan for not protecting Robert during a hunting trip. When dismissed, Barristan bravely stated he could easily defeat Joffrey’s guards. No longer bound by his vows, he pledged his loyalty to Queen Daenerys Targaryen. Barristan was a highly skilled and experienced warrior, even capable of defeating the legendary Ser Duncan the Tall, as told in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Ser Gerold Hightower
The White Bull
Ser Gerold Hightower was a remarkably skilled warrior. Compared to him, Ser Duncan was still relatively inexperienced. Ser Gerold had fought for two kings – Jaehaerys II and Aerys II – and bravely gave his life protecting Prince Rhaegar Targaryen.
While Ser Gerold Hightower followed Ser Duncan the Tall as a legendary knight, his fighting ability, as shown in the Tower of Joy scene in Game of Thrones, is exceptional – very few warriors could compare. In the broader history of A Song of Ice and Fire, Ser Duncan died in the devastating fire at Summerhall, after which Ser Gerold Hightower became Lord Commander under King Jaehaerys II.
Ser Arthur Dayne
Sword Of The Morning
Ser Arthur Dayne, known as the Sword of the Morning, was considered the most skilled swordsman in the Seven Kingdoms. He was a deadly but honorable fighter, completely devoted to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. As shown in Game of Thrones, he was famous for fighting with two swords at once, and even Ned Stark recognized his incredible skill.
I’ve learned that the name “Sword of the Morning” isn’t just given to anyone in House Dayne. It’s a title earned by a knight who proves they’re worthy to wield Dawn, their family’s incredible greatsword. Right now, Ser Duncan has a lot to prove before he’d even have a chance against the current Sword of the Morning.
