It’s looking more and more likely that Ubisoft will soon announce a remastered version of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, tentatively titled Black Flag Resynced. Rumors have been circulating for a while, and recent evidence strongly suggests they’re true. This evidence includes comments from the actor who played Edward Kenway, music from Black Flag appearing on Ubisoft’s official channels, and a rating for Black Flag Resynced discovered in December 2025. The announcement feels inevitable, and will prove all the online speculation correct.
Ubisoft hasn’t officially confirmed or denied the rumors about a Black Flag remake, so it’s best to be skeptical until more information is available.
Rumors about a potential remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag have been circulating, with some details coming from industry insiders. In September 2025, French gaming magazine Jeux Video Magazine published a report outlining specifics of the remake, including its gameplay, story, and technology. They stated the game is being built using the same engine as Assassin’s Creed Shadows – Ubisoft’s Anvil Pipeline. According to the report, this new version of Black Flag would remove the modern-day segments and restore content that was previously cut, specifically a storyline involving the popular character Mary Read, details of which are already known to fans.
What We Know About Mary Read’s Cut Content in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag
Mary Read was a well-known pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy. She often disguised herself as a man, going by the name James Kidd, and only revealed she was a woman at surprising moments – like during fights or when talking privately with another female pirate, Anne Bonny. This clever disguise touched on issues of gender and sexuality, and her story was featured in the video game Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, where she’s a key ally to the main character, Kenway.
Her character already plays a significant part in the game, but she’s expected to have an even bigger role in Black Flag Resynced. According to Darby McDevitt, the narrative director for Black Flag, Ubisoft originally intended to include a scene in Nassau between chapters 10 and 11. This scene would have been based on a true historical event where Read and Bonny defended their injured companions from attacking British ships. It’s unknown how Edward Kenway would have been involved—perhaps he would have needed rescuing too—but it would have been amazing to see this historical moment recreated in Black Flag.
Why More Mary Read Content Is a Boon for Black Flag Resynced
Many Assassin’s Creed games rely heavily on their supporting characters – historical figures, or those based on them – who often prove more engaging than the main hero. Mary Read is one of these characters, making it a logical choice to give her a bigger role in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced. While creatively a good fit, expanding Read’s involvement also makes practical sense.
As many Assassin’s Creed fans are talking about, the rumored remake of Black Flag is reportedly removing all modern-day sections – the parts outside of the Animus simulation. Whether this is a positive change is up for debate, but it would make the remake more similar to recent Assassin’s Creed games, which focus less on the modern storyline. By focusing more on the historical narrative within the Animus – including the 18th-century setting, characters like Mary Read, and pirate adventures – this Black Flag remake could become a more focused and immersive experience, emphasizing thrilling pirate action and historical events, and reducing the complexity of the sci-fi elements.
