Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Cutting 1 Iconic Feature is a Logical Progression After AC Shadows

Everyone’s been talking about a remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, often called Black Flag Resynced, but we haven’t gotten official confirmation from Ubisoft yet, so it’s best to take rumors with a grain of salt. Still, it’s one of the games I’m most excited about for 2026! I’m also looking forward to titles like Resident Evil: Requiem, Saros, Marvel’s Wolverine, Control: Resonant, and GTA 6, but Black Flag is a particularly special game for me – and for many Assassin’s Creed fans. It’s often considered a standout entry in the series, and it’s my personal favorite.

For years, fans have been hoping for a remake of Black Flag, and last year it felt like it might actually happen. Leaks and even comments from the actor who voiced Edward Kenway got people talking. A video from Jeuxvideo in September contained a major leak, claiming the remake, called Black Flag Resynced, would remove all of the modern-day sections from the original game. This news has been very controversial. Initially, I was disappointed, but after some thought, I can see why the developers might make that change.

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced Saying Goodbye to Modern Day Scenes Only Makes Sense After Shadows

Spoilers for Assassin’s Creed 3.

The release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows signaled a shift for the series. Ubisoft decided to move all future modern-day storylines to the Animus Hub, separating them from the historical plots. While the modern-day elements have always been a key part of Assassin’s Creed – and many fans, myself included, enjoy them – the series has faced challenges with a cohesive story since the character Desmond was killed off in Assassin’s Creed 3.

Killing Off Desmond Was a Huge Mistake

I wasn’t disappointed by Layla Hassan taking over in Assassin’s Creed: Origins, but Desmond Miles’ death left a significant gap. He was the central figure in the series’ modern-day storyline. Unfortunately, his story didn’t reach a satisfying conclusion, and Ubisoft seemed unsure how to proceed afterward. A former Ubisoft developer, Marc-Alexis Coté, even acknowledged that ending Desmond’s arc was challenging and that the modern storyline struggled as a result. The new Animus Hub offers a chance to rebuild that narrative, making it more consistent. While keeping the modern and historical storylines completely separate might not be sustainable long-term, the Animus Hub should allow Ubisoft to develop these plot points and strengthen the overall story.

Cutting the Modern Scenes in Black Flag Presents Some Challenges

The recent leaks for Black Flag Resynced don’t confirm whether the modern-day segments will be accessible through the Animus Hub, but fans are hoping they will be. If those scenes are removed, it would likely cause a lot of discussion, as the modern-day Observatory sequences are directly tied to the story’s discoveries in Edward Kenway’s timeline. Changing the story comes with both benefits and drawbacks. It’s possible only parts of the modern narrative will be cut, not all of it. However, if we assume the entire modern storyline is removed, the remake will need new content to fill the gap. Fortunately, leaks from Jeuxvideo suggest a potential addition that could actually make Black Flag Resynced even more engaging.

Honestly, it was tough seeing Desmond’s story come to a close. After that, the present-day parts of the games just didn’t feel quite as strong, and it felt like things were searching for a new direction.

According to Leaks, Black Flag Resynced Scrapping the Modern Storyline Will Make Room for Cut Content

While some fans are concerned about the possibility of removing the modern-day sections of the game, there’s a potential benefit: we might see a more substantial role for the character Mary Read in Black Flag Resynced. Originally, Mary Read was intended to have a bigger story arc in Black Flag, but it was shortened due to the game’s pacing. If Ubisoft has used the space freed up by removing the modern storyline to expand on Mary Read’s character, it could fix the pacing issues that held her back before. Many players found Mary Read to be a compelling character they wanted to learn more about, and not everyone enjoyed the modern-day segments. Replacing those segments with her story could be a significant improvement, and it would also allow new players to jump into the game without being confused by a storyline they don’t understand.

Other Changes That Are Rumored to Be Coming to Black Flag Resynced

  • The game reportedly has the same map, but more activities.
  • Changes to loot and gear.
  • Reworking gameplay and RPG systems to be more in line with recent Assassin’s Creed games.

An Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced Announcement Feels Imminent

Ubisoft hasn’t officially confirmed anything about the remake, but several clues suggest it will be released in March. An unannounced game is scheduled to launch before the end of Ubisoft’s fiscal year, which is March 31st, and a domain name related to ‘Black Flag Resynced’ has surfaced. While Ubisoft remains silent, everything indicates an announcement is coming very soon.

While things are looking good, it’s best to stay realistic about when Black Flag Resynced might be released – many fans, including myself, are hoping for a launch this year. We won’t know for certain until Ubisoft officially confirms it. When they do, it will be interesting to see if the rumors about removed modern-day content are accurate. If those rumors are true, it could cause some debate. The modern storyline in Assassin’s Creed is engaging, but it might work better as a separate series of games to create a more focused story. Regardless, returning to Edward Kenway’s adventures will be fantastic – he’s a highlight of the entire series.
