A remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, often considered a highlight of the Assassin’s Creed series, is looking increasingly likely. For months, rumors and leaks have circulated about a potential, large-scale recreation of the game. While Ubisoft hasn’t officially confirmed anything, many believe a remake is probable. It would be a relatively safe bet for Ubisoft, and it would also give them a chance to use the gameplay style from their more recent Assassin’s Creed games. Essentially, if Ubisoft wants to revamp the series, Black Flag would be a smart game to start with.
Rumors about a remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag suggest it won’t play like the original. Instead of the open, sandbox-style gameplay of the 2013 game, the remake is expected to use the newer combat and progression system introduced in Origins. This means a new gear system based on stats and a revised combat experience. The story will also change, with the modern-day storyline being removed to make room for more historical content experienced through the Animus. According to Jeux Vidéo Magazine, some of this new content will include storylines and missions that were originally cut from the first Black Flag. If true, there’s one specific plotline fans will likely be excited to see brought back.
Spoilers ahead for Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag.

Mary Read’s Role in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag
Mary Read, a character in the Assassin’s Creed games, is based on a real historical figure. While details about the actual Mary Read are scarce, she is known to have been one of the few confirmed female pirates. This limited historical information makes her ideal for a fictional series like Assassin’s Creed, providing enough background to intrigue players without limiting the creative possibilities of her story.
In Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, Mary Read appears as one of the pirates, but she’s actually a hidden member of the Assassin Order. She’s smart, skilled, and charming, and she greatly influences the game’s main character, Edward Kenway, ultimately leading him to join the Assassins. She’s a key and well-remembered character in Black Flag, so fans are thrilled about the possibility of seeing more of her in the upcoming remake.
Cut Mary Read Content That Could Make Its Way into the AC: Black Flag Remake
Darby McDevitt, the narrative director for Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, has revealed that Mary Read was originally intended to have a larger role in the game’s story, particularly around chapters 10 and 11, focusing on Edward’s betrayal by Bartholomew Roberts. Initially, the plan was for Edward to seek out Mary Read and travel to Nassau in pursuit of the Crystal Skull after being betrayed. This would have led to a Templar attack on Nassau, where Read and Anne Bonny would defend their injured male crew from the British army – a scenario inspired by a real historical event involving the two famous pirates.
McDevitt explains that this story element was removed to keep the game flowing well and maintain a good pace. However, it would have been a compelling way to explore one of the game’s most fascinating historical characters. It also would have given Edward a more direct role in finding the Crystal Skull, highlighting his impulsive and greedy nature. This, in turn, would have strengthened the dynamic between him and Mary Read, who often challenges his selfishness throughout the original Black Flag story.
