In a recent disclosure, it emerged that the upcoming mainline Assassin’s Creed game from Ubisoft, tentatively titled Assassin’s Creed Hexe following AC Shadows, appears to be resorting yet again to an outworn narrative device for its plot progression: a vengeance theme. This revelation is disheartening, as it perpetuates a long-standing pattern in the Assassin’s Creed series that has been widely criticized as overused.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but notice that ever since Ezio in Assassin’s Creed 2, it seems like every new game in the series revolves around revenge as the main plot device. It’s become quite repetitive, with the protagonist joining either the Assassin Brotherhood or the Templars, all for the sake of getting revenge and moving the story forward. Now, with Elsa being rumored as the main character for Assassin’s Creed Hexe, it looks like we might be seeing more of the same, which could leave many fans feeling a bit disappointed.
Assassin’s Creed Hexe Falls Into the Same Pit as Most Other Assassin’s Creeds
The issue with the alleged plot of Assassin’s Creed Hexe, which involves killing off Elsa’s mother as a starting point, isn’t just that it’s a revenge story; it’s that it’s a repetitive revenge story that closely mirrors several other plots in the Assassin’s Creed series. Following the success of Ezio’s revenge tale in Assassin’s Creed 2, the franchise has consistently struggled to replicate that success. If the leaks are accurate, it seems that Assassin’s Creed Hexe is taking the same worn-out path.
In contrast to the usual pattern of troubled protagonists found in the “Assassin’s Creed” series, Edward Kenway stands out as an exception. He’s not driven by revenge but rather finds himself entangled in the struggle between Templars and Assassins due to circumstance. Given Edward’s popularity and the high regard in which “Black Flag” is held among “Assassin’s Creed” game rankings, it could have made for a more intriguing storyline if Elsa had chosen to emulate Kenway instead of Ezio. The series seems ready for a less vengeful central character.
Assassin’s Creed Hexe’s Story Could Be Predictable in the Worst Way Possible
In a manner typical of the storytelling style in ‘Assassin’s Creed’, it’s not hard to imagine that Hexe’s narrative might follow a pattern similar to what’s suggested on paper, becoming somewhat repetitive. At the start of the game, Elsa’s mother could be falsely accused of witchcraft and put to death by fire. Heartbroken and enraged, Elsa would swear vengeance, embarking on a quest to avenge her mother by eliminating those responsible. However, due to certain circumstances, it wouldn’t be feasible to kill the main antagonist right away. Instead, Elsa would first need to gather allies who could assist her in her mission. A friendly assassin-mentor might take her under his wing, inviting her into the secretive Assassin Brotherhood. This mentor could then connect her with a local leader, who would guide Elsa towards her target by assigning various tasks that help her establish a presence in the region.
In my gaming world, as I delve deeper into the tale of Elsa in this Assassin’s Creed game, it seems like the story might not end with her simply avenging her mother. A few hours into the narrative, there could be a twist where the person I swore to bring down is either dead, someone else took their life, they weren’t the real culprit, or they managed to seek forgiveness for their wrongdoings. This unexpected turn would lead Elsa on a new path, sending her after several high-ranking Templars before another shocker hits – my assassin-teacher-friend might actually be the true villain all along! This is just speculation based on a sneak peek at the game’s premise, but given how predictable Assassin’s Creed plots have become lately, it sadly feels like a possibility.
Assassin’s Creed Hexe’s Story Might Still Surprise Fans, But it’s Unlikely
Even though the opening premise of Assassin’s Creed Hexe might seem rather routine, there are potential ways to keep its storyline captivating. Introducing an anti-hero narrative, a seemingly innocent assassination, or even a swift revenge mission before delving into more engaging elements could set AC Hexe apart from its peers. However, given Ubisoft’s history of adhering to the most conventional storytelling paths, this might just be wishful thinking. Instead, it seems probable that Hexe will blend into the landscape like many other AC games do in the weeks following launch, as its central character’s motivation isn’t particularly innovative.
