As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen the evolution of gaming from the humble beginnings of 8-bit graphics to the immersive worlds we have today. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Infinity has me both excited and apprehensive. On one hand, the prospect of a single hub for all future Assassin’s Creed content is tantalizing. On the other, I’ve witnessed firsthand the pitfalls that came with Call of Duty HQ.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a blend of excitement and curiosity about the impending arrival of Assassin’s Creed Infinity. This new venture is poised to redefine the Ubisoft franchise, potentially for better or for worse. The unveiling of Infinity will mark a significant shift, as the series aligns with other iconic gaming franchises by transitioning towards all-encompassing hubs, where future content, including major releases, will be seamlessly delivered and hosted.
When it comes to shifting the Assassin’s Creed series to a centralized platform like Assassin’s Creed Infinity, there are some ongoing concerns about this method of content delivery that could potentially be an issue. The introduction of Call of Duty HQ, another major gaming IP adopting a single content hub, has been one of the most controversial aspects of the franchise since its launch in 2022. Among the issues with Call of Duty HQ, one problem that Assassin’s Creed Infinity might encounter is the absence of PlayStation Platinum Trophies for future releases, a concern that has been raised.
Ubisoft Can Learn a Lot From Call of Duty HQ’s Shortcomings For AC Infinity
In 2022, the main base or headquarters for the popular first-person shooter game “Call of Duty,” known as “CoD HQ,” was launched simultaneously with the rebooted version of “Modern Warfare 2.” Since then, this central hub has been used by the longstanding FPS titan to unveil its annual releases. It appears that future “Call of Duty” games will likely be connected to this hub, marking a significant shift from the previous release format where each “Call of Duty” project was launched as a standalone title apart from the broader franchise.
Although some enthusiasts believe that shifting towards the Call of Duty HQ has blurred the distinct characters of recent games, it seemed likely that a single platform for the IP would emerge given its frequent release pattern and the concurrent existence of Warzone with annual editions. The unified hub for Call of Duty has also fueled criticism about the need-to-be-online feature in modern CoD games, but another concern regarding user experience has been more pressing for a particular group of fans.
Due to all the Call of Duty games like Modern Warfare 2, MW3, and Black Ops 6 now being managed under one roof at Call of Duty HQ, none of these individual games offer Platinum Trophies on PlayStation 5. Instead, there’s a single, expansive trophy list that encompasses all three titles, causing some problems for achievement hunters on Xbox. The absence of Platinum Call of Duty Trophies on current PlayStation hardware has been a contentious issue since the launch of Call of Duty HQ.
Assassin’s Creed Infinity Can Still Maintain Individuality Across its Projects
2022 saw the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, coinciding with the launch of CoD HQ. It appears probable that this expansive live-service platform for the Assassin’s Creed series will debut together with Assassin’s Creed Shadows in February 2025. Shadows seems to be the initial project among many future Assassin’s Creed titles planned to be accessible via the Infinity platform, with Assassin’s Creed Hexe being one of the other games currently in development at Ubisoft.
It appears that the AC Infinity project is likely crucial for Ubisoft, as they need to manage their own multiplayer game, Assassin’s Creed Invictus, much like how Activision supports Warzone through Call of Duty HQ. With numerous projects planned for the AC franchise post-Infinity, Ubisoft must avoid merging identities and user experiences across different games. Establishing separate achievement and trophy lists for each release on various platforms will enable them to distinguish Infinity from other industry giants like Call of Duty HQ.
