Simon Lemay-Comtois, a director on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has indicated that the team might revisit the idea of having two playable characters in future Assassin’s Creed games. However, they would only do so if it made sense for the story and suited the game’s environment. While Shadows wasn’t the first Assassin’s Creed game to feature multiple protagonists, it was the first to make them play differently. Many players, though, felt this feature wasn’t fully successful in the game.
This year, Ubisoft Quebec transported players from the world of Assassin’s Creed Mirage to 16th-century Japan – a setting fans have eagerly awaited. But Assassin’s Creed Shadows is different: players can experience the game as Yasuke, a powerful armored warrior who prefers direct combat, or as Naoe, a stealthy Shinobi skilled in parkour and assassination. The game’s story follows both characters, letting players choose between Yasuke’s forceful, combat-focused style and Naoe’s quieter, more strategic methods.
New Assassin’s Creed Games May Feature Dual Protagonists Again
In a recent interview with Games Radar, Simon Lemay-Comtois, associate game director, suggested that Ubisoft could create more games with two main characters, but only if it makes sense for the story and world. He explained that they’ve learned it can work, but they need a compelling narrative reason to use dual protagonists again. While Ubisoft Quebec isn’t promising any future Assassin’s Creed games will definitely have two playable characters, they’re definitely open to the idea under the right circumstances. It’s important to remember that different Ubisoft studios work on the Assassin’s Creed series, so the next game won’t be developed by the Quebec team.
The game’s associate director acknowledges the decision to have two main characters has proven controversial. “Having two leads can really split people’s opinions,” explained Lemay-Comtois. He added that some players simply prefer one character over the other and don’t enjoy playing as the one they dislike. Ubisoft was aware that players might react differently to Naoe and Yasuke before releasing the game.
Look, I get that everyone’s going to have a favorite character, depending on how they like to play. But some people just aren’t into the idea at all. I saw one comment where someone said they’d rather have just one really good, interesting character. But honestly, I think it’s awesome! It gives me a reason to play through the game again, because each character plays so differently. It’s like getting two totally different experiences in one game, and I’m all for that.
The debate around Yasuke and Naoe partly stems from their different ways of playing, but Assassin’s Creed had dual protagonists before them. In 2015’s Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, developed by Ubisoft Quebec, players controlled twins Jacob and Evie Frye, who had distinct personalities. While they weren’t different to play as, each twin had missions unique to them. Odyssey also featured a similar concept, though players had to pick just one character for each playthrough.
There’s a strong belief that the next Assassin’s Creed game will be a remake of Black Flag. This likely means the game won’t feature two playable characters. While Ubisoft hasn’t officially announced the remake, leaks suggest it’s in active development, and many expect an official reveal at The Game Awards on December 11th.
