Assassin’s Creed Shadows Could Be Getting Multiplayer!

Summary

  • Recently datamined files hint at a multiplayer component coming to Assassin’s Creed Shadows, potentially allowing players to team up or engage in PvP.
  • The last game in the franchise to have co-op was Unity in 2014, while PvP was last seen in 2013’s Black Flag.
  • The game’s first expansion, Claws of Awaji, will be released sometime in 2025.

I’m thrilled to share that it seems like my favorite game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, could be introducing a long-awaited feature from the franchise – multiplayer! If this proves true, we, the players, will get the chance to explore feudal Japan collectively and revive Player versus Player (PvP) interactions in the series, which has been missing for nearly a decade.

Launched in March 2025, “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” transports the established series to feudal Japan, weaving together the narratives of Naoe and Yasuke. These characters exhibit distinct playstyles; while Naoe relies heavily on stealth, Yasuke leans more on his raw power. The release of “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” saw over a million players on its debut day, with fans commending its emphasis on stealth and exploration compared to previous games in the series. Ubisoft has hinted at a significant reveal for “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” set for April 30, sparking speculation about the game’s forthcoming content.

There are hints from data miners suggesting that the next game in the Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, might feature multiplayer mode. A skilled modder named Sliderv2 discovered references to “multiplayer,” “Player vs Player (PvP),” and “PvP maps” within the game files, which could indicate a return of multiplayer in the Assassin’s Creed series. Although this data could simply be leftover from tests conducted during the development of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it also raises the possibility that players may soon collaborate on missions or compete against each other online in PvP battles.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Might Get Co-op and PvP

If “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” brings back its multiplayer component, it would signify the first time this element has been included since approximately a decade ago. The series last featured multiplayer in “Assassin’s Creed Unity,” where as many as 4 players could join cooperative missions. The last instance when players could compete against each other was in “Assassin’s Creed Black Flag,” which highlighted dedicated Player-versus-Player modes. These features were well-received by gamers, but they were omitted from subsequent games that prioritized a single-player experience.

It’s possible that the upcoming announcement isn’t about multiplayer, but instead focuses on the new expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows called Claws of Awaji. This DLC will transport players to the enigmatic island of Awaji, a place teeming with traps set by a fresh enemy faction. The Claws of Awaji expansion is also expected to unveil a new weapon type for Naoe, along with additional skills, equipment, and abilities. Unfortunately, we don’t have an exact release date yet, but it’s scheduled for 2025.
