In the game “Assassin’s Creed Shadows“, the castles serve as a significant type of secondary activity. Essentially, they function as fortresses where enemies reside, ready to be challenged by either Yasuke or Naoe, each with their unique approaches to overcoming them.

1) One effective method for earning Mastery Points in the game is by constructing castles, and noteworthily, these structures are also prime spots to acquire rare, epic or legendary equipment pieces early on.

Initially, these tasks might appear daunting, but don’t let that deter you from attempting them. In the guide I’ve put together, I’ll walk you through the fundamental aspects of castles in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, offering useful advice and strategies to make the process smoother.

How To Prepare For Castles

Typically, these additional activities within the series have been ones you can jump right into without any prior planning. However, with Shadows, a brief preparation beforehand will help avoid potential issues.

To begin with, I’d suggest employing Naoe as your primary choice for conquering these fortresses. Her unique abilities and ninja tactics lend themselves to swift, silent eliminations, while her Kunai can simplify certain situations, making it possible to achieve quick 1-shot victories.

Despite Yasuke boasting impressive resilience and potent multi-target abilities capable of swiftly defeating foes, his movement and overall handling can be cumbersome. Compared to Naoe, in my individual playthroughs, he generally outperforms and offers a more enjoyable gaming experience.

With Yasuke, there isn’t typically a universal strategy to employ. Instead, he’s the ideal character for those who prefer an aggressive playstyle, charging headlong with guns ablaze, eschewing stealth tactics.

To ensure success in our mission, it’s crucial that your scouts are fully powered, which can be accomplished by charging them using a Kakurega device. These scouts will then be tasked with identifying and retrieving valuable resource caches stored within locked rooms throughout the castles. We require these resources in abundance for our Hideout renovations.

How To Clear Castles

After getting everything ready, here are the fundamental goals I’ve summarized for taking over a castle, along with some helpful suggestions to execute them efficiently:

1. Secure the outer defenses: Repair any weak points or breaches in the walls and towers, reinforce gates, and set up strategic lookout posts.
– Tip: Use catapults to destroy any attacking siege engines before they can damage your castle.

2. Fortify the inner keep: Reinforce doors, walls, and staircases within the main castle structure.
– Tip: Place archers at key vantage points for maximum effect.

3. Control access points: Secure all entrances to the inner courtyard, including hidden passages or secret doors.
– Tip: Set traps or alarms on potential access points to warn you of any intruders.

4. Organize a garrison: Assign soldiers to guard key locations and coordinate their movements effectively.
– Tip: Train your troops in various combat tactics, so they can adapt to different situations.

5. Maintain supplies: Store food, weapons, and other essential resources securely and ensure they’re replenished regularly.
– Tip: Establish a system for rationing supplies during extended sieges.

6. Spy on the enemy: Gather intelligence about your opponents’ movements, numbers, and strategies by using spies or scouts.
– Tip: Use coded messages to communicate sensitive information without risk of interception.

7. Negotiate for peace (if possible): If the odds seem unfavorable, consider proposing a truce or negotiating terms of surrender.
– Tip: Be prepared to offer concessions, but do not compromise your castle’s integrity or safety.

  • Defeat the Samurai Daishos: Your main objective will be to kill these elite-level enemies throughout the castle. A protip is to use your observation element via L2LT to scan and tag them from a mile away. Most importantly, you can one-shot these guys if you’ve got mid-tier skills like Assassination Damage 1 on Naoe, avoiding the need to fight them.
  • Loot Building Resource Shipments: They’re found in locked storage rooms, as mentioned previously. Find the enemy with the key by using observation, loot every room you come to, and tag the shipments here for your scouts to pick up.
  • Loot the Legendary Chest: Once you’ve defeated all the samurai in the castle, head to the main castle building to plunder a chest containing your gear item reward, which is located on one of the topmost floors. Be careful of the patrolling ronin guards here on each floor, as they can gang up on you with reinforcements.
  • Viewpoint synchronization: The main castle buildings will always have a viewpoint at the top. I generally do these at the end once you get the main chest for the legendary/epic gear so you can synchronize and leave the castle right after them.

Tips & Tricks

In your approach with Naoe, aim to capitalize on the environment extensively for your benefit and focus on executing aerial assassinations. This is because adversaries are unable to access rooftops.

Spend time exploring each section of the courtyard within the castle. My strategy usually involves dealing with the adversaries located on the outskirts first, like the archers and long-range gunners, as shown in the picture given.

After that, carefully remove one samurai and any common enemy combatants at a time, as they yield only small amounts of experience points. Additionally, there are numerous loot containers strewn about which could potentially contain upgrade materials for your equipment.

If you can handle those castles under cover of darkness, it’s advantageous because the enemy AI adjustments, your ability to conceal yourself in the darkness, and certain bonus damage advantages that become active at night all contribute to making this a favorable situation for you.

But should you find yourself in trouble and surrounded while employing Naoe, there’s a useful tactic: promptly deploy a smoke bomb to swiftly extricate yourself from danger and flee the situation.

In conclusion, the double assassination is essential for Naoe because of certain strategic enemy placements and the Kunai Assassination Damage, enabling you to take down Samurai Daishos with a single strike.
