Details about a Switch 2 version of *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* have appeared online ahead of any official announcement. A retailer mistakenly listed the game, fueling speculation that it will be released on Nintendo’s new console soon.
The latest Assassin’s Creed game came out on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC on March 20th. Before that, people had been talking for months about a possible version for the new Nintendo Switch 2, with the first rumors appearing in early 2024.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Switch 2 Physical Release Spotted on French Retailer Website
More evidence suggesting that *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* will be released on the Switch 2 has appeared online. A product page for the game was briefly posted on the website of French retailer Auchan, showing a physical copy for Nintendo’s new console. However, instead of a traditional game cartridge, the listing features a box labeled with a ‘Game-Key Card,’ indicating a digital download code is included.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows May Not Fit on Any Existing Switch 2 Cartridge
Assassin’s Creed Shadows requires between 100 and 123 gigabytes of storage, making it too large to fit on the current largest Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridges, which max out at 64GB. Even if the game’s graphics were simplified and heavily compressed, it would still likely be too big. This, combined with faster loading times when games are stored in the Switch 2’s internal memory and the lower production cost of Game-Key Cards (a new digital format), explains why many Switch 2 games are using this format instead of traditional cartridges. While some fans dislike the Game-Key Card format due to concerns about owning the game and the inconvenience it may cause, these factors make it a practical choice for developers.
As a big Assassin’s Creed fan, I was really excited to hear what Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, said on their recent earnings call! He hinted that *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* is getting some kind of follow-up or new editions soon. Even more interesting, he also mentioned they have a game planned for the new Switch 2, and it’s coming out before March 2026. A lot of people are now thinking that means *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* is definitely heading to the Switch 2, which would be awesome!
Ubisoft is already bringing games to Nintendo’s new console, having launched *Star Wars Outlaws* on the eShop in September 2025. Beyond the Switch 2, the updated versions of *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* that Ubisoft discussed earlier this year probably include a version for iPhones and iPads, which has been officially announced but doesn’t have a release date yet.
