In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Kagemitsu, the Naginata, is usually the fourth significant assassination target you encounter. Unlike other targets where you might just follow a marker and take them down with your hidden blade, you’ll need to finish a sequence of interconnected missions that provide insights into Yasuke’s history.

In the majority of these quests, you have the option to play as either Yasuke or Naoe. However, for a more immersive storyline experience, I’d suggest choosing Yasuke due to the high number of combat-focused encounters that you may encounter. Continue reading to learn how to locate and defeat the Naginata.

The Lady of Whispers

Kick off this new adventure by darting into my Hideout’s quest hub first thing. There, you’ll spot a mission linked to Yasuke’s tale, a task I can’t initiate with Naoe for some reason. Seems like I’ve gotta trade places with another character to get it on the screen.

Journey towards Azuchi, situated in the southeastern part of Lake Biwa, on the map’s eastern edge. Seek out Sokenji Temple, and afterwards, proceed eastward until you reach the Hideyoshi Residence, where a band of hostile soldiers are assaulting an innocent civilian.

As an enthusiastic adventurer, I always rely on scouts to guide me towards my objectives more efficiently. They help me spot quest markers and identify important landmarks and characters without any hassle.

Instead of charging head-on with all your troops, it’s more effective to entice a few soldiers to follow you down the stairs and handle them in manageable groups. After you’ve subdued the attackers, Lady Nene will guide you back to Sokenji Temple. Simply chat with Lady Nene there to finish the chapter.

An Evening In Otsu

As a gamer, I’d say it like this: “Alright, I need to kick off the next mission. I’ll grab the details from the notice board first, then head towards Otsu’s Upper District, which is at the south end of Lake Biwa. Once there, I should find Aoi near a big red gate. She’ll fill me in about an upcoming duel on Seta Bridge. Let’s see if I can handle this one!

Head towards the southeastern direction until you reach a bridge. Jump off it onto a ledge on the side. Here, you’ll find a letter that initiates a time jump, transitioning into an epic sequence. Instead of engaging in a duel with Shotei, Kagemitsu and his soldiers ambush him. Kagemitsu then flees, leaving you to fight his troops. Once they’re defeated, speak with Aoi to conclude the chapter and gain 1000 XP. With the Koga-ryu against us.

Against the Koga-ryu

To advance with the Naginata plot, venture east from the bridge towards the Radiant Meadows. Utilize a scout or ascend a nearby vantage point for smoother navigation before entering Koga village. There, you’ll encounter Shotei in a state of intoxication within an abandoned building, and you’ll have to protect him against another onslaught of adversaries.

These adversaries could prove lethal if you’re not properly equipped or haven’t advanced enough in levels. Dodge their attacks when their weapons emit a bright flash, neutralize ranged assailants first, and systematically defeat them individually to maintain the upper hand in combat.

Shotei shares limited details, hinting that his daughter Katsuhime could provide additional insights. Make your way to the Enryakuji Temple, as indicated on your map.

The place is dangerous and heavily protected, but you can either evade these adversaries with Naoe or overcome them using Yasuke. Katsuhime can be found on the rooftop of a deserted building. Talking to her will finish the chapter and reward you with an additional 1000 XP.

The area is dangerous and has many guards, but you can either slip by using Naoe or defeat them all with Yasuke. Katsuhime is on the roof of a deserted building. Speak to her to finish the chapter and get 1000 XP.

Showdown in Sakamoto

With your strategy in place and a few trusted companions by your side, it’s high time to face off against Kagemitsu the Naginata. To initiate this battle, seek out Shotei at the foot of a crumbled tower that stands tall on a northern mountain near Sakamoto Kakurega, west of Lake Biwa. Keep in mind that engaging with him will commit you to this mission, so make sure you’re well-prepared before approaching him for the conversation.

Defeating Gamo Yoshimitsu

Initially, Yasuke needs to face off against Gamo Yoshimitsu, the expert Naginata wielder. Gamo resides in his manor situated southeast of the town’s Sake Brewery. If you wish for a direct confrontation, you can storm through the main entrance and take down his household security. Alternatively, if you prefer a more covert strategy, you could climb the wall to the left of the entrance, keeping a low profile to remain unnoticed.

Fighting against Yoshimitsu requires caution: most of his strikes are hard to block, and they all cause poison damage. Many of his attacks start long combo chains that can’t be dodged once the initial hit lands. Dodging is vital for Yasuke’s safety: dodge Gamo’s attacks and counterattack during his openings to complete the first stage of your strategy.

Destroying the Naginata’s explosives

Currently, you’re assuming the role of Naoe, sailing beside Katsuhime in a boat while they engage in conversation. It’s worth noting that Katsuhime can be romantically pursued by Naoe. If you wish to delve into a romantic storyline with her, make sure to choose the heart option when their dialogue presents it.

In this region, many guards can be evaded with a bit of patience and some agility that involves climbing; the remaining ones should be neutralized as discreetly as possible to prevent detection. Shurikens and Kunai prove useful in this scenario, allowing you to disable alarm systems and trigger explosions from a distance without having to approach your targets directly.

Three crucial barrels have specific locations: one is housed within a structure open on all sides in the courtyard, another is shaded by an awning to the south, and the third is positioned close to a shed used for training. Once these barrels are eliminated, navigate across rooftops to reach Katsuhime to conclude the mission phase.

Use the Observe skill to find the explosives more easily and to avoid getting lost in the dark.

Dueling the Naginata

Here’s your scenario rephrased: During the climactic showdown, you’ll have the option to employ either Yasuke or Naoe. The Naginata is concealed within a fortress that’s heavily defended. Guards are stationed on multiple floors, and triggering an alarm will signal the whole stronghold.

Choosing between Naoe for stealthy approaches to Kagemitsu or Yasuke for more effective naginata fights depends on your preferred playstyle. Neither option appears to have an obvious advantage over the other.

Scattered across the property are several attendants. They won’t initiate hostilities, but will alert if they catch sight of either Naoe or Yasuke. Employ eagle-eyed vigilance to spot potential threats even before they come into view behind walls.

Lure Kagemitsu out of his tower by placing a dog in a well-lit room on the second floor. If you take the dog’s food, it will reward you with six rations and start barking, which should entice Kagemitsu to investigate. Once he enters the darkened room, carry out an assassination.

Based on the challenge you’re facing, the assassination sequence in the game doesn’t instantly defeat Kagemitsu. Instead, it sets off a boss battle. He might ask for reinforcements, but generally, only one enemy will show up; prioritize defeating the smaller foe initially to make your task less complicated.

In this battle, Naginata clashes with his namesake, utilizing an array of unavoidable attacks and the extended reach of his spear to maintain the upper hand. Regardless if you’re controlling Yasuke or Naoe, evading is crucial for survival. It’s fortunate that the dog provided you with additional supplies!

Upon his defeat, a scene unfolds where Kagemitsu asserts he’s unaware of the Shinbakufu’s missing crates. Your quest comes to an end here, rewarding you with 2000 XP, 295 gold coins, a Stack Damage After Block engraving, a legendary sword for Yasuke, and one mastery point.
