As an ardent fan, I’ve been adamant that the rigorous PC specifications for Assassin’s Creed Shadows would be a challenge for the Steam Deck to handle. However, it appears Ubisoft has pulled off a remarkable feat, managing to make it run smoothly just in time for its launch, leaving me quite impressed!
Excitedly, I share the news that, in an update on their platform, Ubisoft has revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will indeed run smoothly on the Steam Deck from its very first release! Previously, there were doubts due to it not meeting the minimum requirements; but now, it seems we can enjoy this epic adventure on our Steam Decks without any worries!
The team has only indicated that the game will receive support, but they’re waiting for Valve to classify it, implying they’ll decide if the game will be marked as “Playable” or “Verified” on Steam, and what exact features will work on the portable device.
How Will It Compare To Consoles?
Ubisoft recently detailed the performance modes for the PS5 edition of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, breaking down the three distinct configurations and explaining how they will operate on both standard PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition (or Pro) regarding frame rate and ray tracing capabilities.
In simpler terms, they’ve suggested it can play smoothly at a frame rate of 60 per second, and this smoothness is maintained even when the display resolution is increased to 4K not only on PlayStation 5, but also on Xbox Series X.
Currently, it is uncertain if Assassin’s Creed Shadows will run smoothly on the Steam Deck, with a minimum expected frame rate of 30 frames per second being hopeful.
In their respective Steam listings, both Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Valhalla are categorized as “Playable,” though the specific playability details differ between games. Notably, their system requirements are significantly less demanding compared to Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.
Generally speaking, they may not have been specifically tailored for the Steam Deck, but they operate smoothly and can be played on it without encountering any unusual technical or performance problems.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows, following several postponements, is slated for launch on March 20th. However, the exact release times might differ based on the region and gaming platform, with some discrepancies also observed among various digital stores on PC.
Starting today, Xbox Series X|S users can pre-load the game, while players who pre-ordered it on PC will have access to pre-loading from March 17. The PS5 version will open for pre-loading a day later, specifically on March 18.
