For individuals well-versed in the Assassin’s Creed series, Ubisoft is introducing some significant changes with the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Not just the change of setting to Japan, but due to the game’s location, the development team has been meticulously designing its open-world environment.
During a conversation with GamesRadar, Ubisoft developers revealed that their trip to Japan for the development of the action game left them pleasantly surprised by certain aspects.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Not A 1:1 Scale Of Japan
As per Creative Director Jonathan Dumont, when visiting a location, one often encounters sights that, despite having studied numerous books, movies, and other resources, leave you saying “wow, that’s unexpected.” The unique feature in this case was the dense forest of trees and the sheer amount of it. Additionally, there were several small mountains that produced overlapping vistas, which are not typically seen in our usual views.
Moving on, Dumont highlighted a key difference in the gameplay duration compared to previous series installments, where players won’t find an endless stream of point of interest markers.
Dumont points out, “The grandeur of castles and such. Castles are quite large, especially those fortresses – wow, when you visit them, it’s like being taken aback, ‘I hadn’t anticipated this.’ As a result, we had to readjust to truly comprehend the scale’s accuracy.
Expanding on this idea, the Creative Director explains that it’s not about a simple one-to-one comparison, but rather creating an impression of a grand castle situated within a larger ecosystem. The travel times will vary, and each point of interest won’t be immediately followed by another at every 50 meters. Instead, there will be more expansive, natural landscapes that may take longer to traverse, but when you reach a location, there will be much more to explore. The scale has shifted from Odyssey and previous projects, and the focus is on meticulously crafting an environment with exceptional attention to detail.
It seems to me that it could well be a step up from previous Assassin’s Creed games, doesn’t it?
In other news about the game, Ubisoft has released the PC specs, which requires a ray tracing GPU.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is set to launch on March 20th, available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The reason for this second postponement is attributed to perfecting the game’s parkour aspects, as confirmed by Ubisoft.
