As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia as Ubisoft delves into Japan’s Sengoku period with Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. Having played every mainline entry in the series, I’ve always yearned for an authentic samurai experience within the Assassin’s Creed universe.

For nearly 17 years, the Assassin’s Creed franchise has captivated gamers worldwide. On November 15th, it will dive into Japan’s Sengoku era with the release of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, just a few days after the series’ anniversary. While fans are thrilled about experiencing Japan as an assassin, whispers from industry insiders hint that Ubisoft might reimagine some of its past titles in innovative ways over the next decade, drawing from its extensive library of 31 main games (excluding remasters and collections). According to Insider Gaming, these rumors suggest a remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and a remake of an unspecified classic game within the Assassin’s Creed series.

An Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Remake

Initially, one might find it surprising that Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, rather than the original Assassin’s Creed, is being considered for a remake, given its title. However, Black Flag marks the sixth main entry in the series if you count it as Assassin’s Creed 4. All the primary games in the series up until Assassin’s Creed: Rogue, except for the first one, have already received upgrades to 4K resolution on the eighth generation of consoles like the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. These remastered versions have kept the older games playable on modern systems, but they still retain many of the original games’ shortcomings and glitches.

In light of the outstanding critical acclaim and financial success of “Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag,” due in large part to the engaging narrative of Edward Kenway and the enduring pirate ship battles, Ubisoft might consider this remake as a possible sales booster. It could also serve as a means to re-attract older Ubisoft enthusiasts, particularly following the underwhelming launch of “Skull and Bones,” a game that was long awaited but didn’t meet expectations, originally conceived as a multiplayer spin-off of “Black Flag.” At this point, the exact release date for the remake remains unclear, along with any potential story or gameplay modifications it might bring compared to the original.

Potential Setbacks and Improvements of the Black Flag Remake

Remakes are often a dangerous flip of a coin for game releases. On one hand, remakes that remain true to the original for modern consoles can be successful, such as 2023’s Dead Space. On the other hand, remakes that skew far from the original could turn out to be entirely new but fun games or be lambasted for how different it was from the original, such as the graphics of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Given Ubisoft’s past odd choices, the developer could make Black Flag’s ship combat more in line with Skull and Bones than the original. Likewise, the remake could completely remove the modern-day aspect or give the Abstergo employee a name and face to make them an actual character.

Other Assassin’s Creed Games in Need of a Remake

Another version of the “Assassin’s Creed” remake is yet unclear, but logically speaking, it seems plausible that “Assassin’s Creed 1” could be the next one to get a makeover. As you may recall, this game has never been remastered before, which means players have been playing its 2007 version if they wish to experience it today, complete with glitches in collectible flags and all. A remake of “Assassin’s Creed 1” could reignite interest in the story of Desmond Miles following his brief appearance at the end of “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.” This update could also modernize its gameplay mechanics to match those used in later stealth and combat games, as well as include developments from Altair’s story seen in “Assassin’s Creed 2” and “Revelations,” thus consolidating all of Altair’s mainline game story into a single package.

Instead of merely remastering Assassin’s Creed 2 up to Revelations, a more beneficial approach might be to enhance the experience of Assassin’s Creed 3 through a comprehensive remake. The storyline pacing in AC3 is somewhat slow, particularly during the initial stages when players don’t get to play as Connor and embark on their assassin journey promptly. A remake of AC3 could optimize Haytham Kenway’s narrative, making it more engaging for repeat players.

As a gaming enthusiast, I recently got my hands on the remastered versions of “Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag” and “Rogue”, which were the latest Assassin’s Creed games to receive this treatment. This exciting news came in late 2019 when these titles were bundled together as “Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection” for the Nintendo Switch.
