As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of excitement upon hearing about Astro Bot’s upcoming release. However, as someone who’s been on the PC gaming scene since the days of DOS, I can’t help but wish for a chance to explore this vibrant world from the comfort of my Windows desktop.
The head honcho from PlayStation Studios’ Team Asobi, creators of the upcoming game “Astro Bot,” has encouraged PC gamers eager to play it to speak up more. The release date for “Astro Bot” is slated for September 6th on the PS5.
At Sony’s State of Play event held in May 2024, it was announced that Astro Bot is the newest addition to Team Asobi’s series of exclusive 3D platform games for PlayStation consoles. As its release date draws near, the creative director of Astro Bot shared more details about this upcoming project and offered a message to PC gamers who might be interested in experiencing the game’s distinctive action.
Nicolas Doucet, studio director at Team Asobi, expressed in a recent conversation with MinnMax that they are keen to listen to PC gamers who have been waiting to play Astro Bot in the future. “We’re eager to hear from you. Definitely. We want to hear from you,” said Doucet, who previously led Sony’s Japan Studio, around the three-minute mark of the interview.
Will Astro Bot Come to PC?
- Astro Bot is currently a PS5 exclusive, but developer Team Asobi is open to hearing from PC gamers.
The Team Asobi head disclosed many interesting details regarding Astro Bot and its development during the interview. According to Doucet, Sony’s Santa Monica Studio was the most thrilled to have one of their game characters featured in Astro Bot. Kratos, the main protagonist of the studio’s long-running God of War franchise, is among the 150 cameos set to appear in Astro Bot, alongside other popular PlayStation mascots like Aloy from Guerrilla Games’ Horizon and Nathan Drake from Naughty Dog’s Uncharted. There will also be characters from properties not handled by a first-party PlayStation studio, such as Joker from Persona 5, Ryu from Street Fighter, and Kazuma Kiryu from the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise.
In an interview with MinnMax, Doucet made clear that the game Astro Bot won’t be available on PlayStation VR2 because it was developed for a distinct platform. While the PS VR2 officially supports PC from August 7, users of the headset require a $59.99 adapter to access this feature. It was later reported that Sony introduced PC compatibility after production of their virtual reality headset was temporarily stopped, which launched in February 2023.
Previously known as “Astro Bot”, the game “Astro’s Playroom” served as a demonstration for the DualSense controller included with every PlayStation 5. Critics adored it for its engaging gameplay, diverse levels, and stunning graphics. Released in 2020, it was the final game produced by Japan Studio before the studio was disbanded the following year.
