Astro Bot Is “Absolutely” Something Sony Wants To Do

In an intriguing chat I had with Variety, the head honcho at PlayStation Productions, Asad Qizilbash, spilled the beans about the recent evolution concerning Astro Bot’s intellectual property!
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I’m definitely exploring the possibility of our game making it onto PlayStation’s expanding roster of adaptations. The success of Nintendo’s beloved family-friendly movie, Super Mario Bros., has certainly left an impression. It wrapped up its theatrical run with a mind-blowing $1.3 billion at the box office!
To date, PlayStation Productions has undertaken a total of 10 projects for adaptations. These include HBO’s The Last of Us, an Amazon series based on God of War, a film adaption of Horizon Zero Dawn, a movie adaptation for Helldivers 2, and several other projects.
PlayStation Productions chooses which games might become movies or TV shows based on certain factors, such as: if one of our franchises has proven to be a successful game, it’s starting to build a fanbase, and it’s receiving awards. These indicators signal to us the potential for expanding that franchise and its intellectual property (IP).
Qizilbash stated, “We’re always focusing on that aspect, and I believe it’s not merely about receiving awards or nominations. Occasionally, we possess intellectual properties with compelling narratives that a creative individual is eager to transform into something new.
Although Astro Bot may seem like it could make a pleasant family film, crafting a compelling narrative for an entire movie might prove tricky, but who am I to say? The storyline, regardless of what it is, will likely avoid excessive violence, as the game’s initial concept included decapitations, which were deemed unsuitable by PlayStation higher-ups.
I’m completely okay with seeing more PlayStation intellectual properties adapted into movies or TV shows, as long as the quality and attention to detail remains consistent. By the way, did you hear that HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 is coming out soon? Game director and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann confirmed that while it deviates somewhat from the game, its core essence or “DNA” is still intact.
