Summary
- Sony is looking to adapt Astro Bot into a movie or TV series due to its success and established audience.
- Video game adaptations have seen positive changes as movies and TV shows have improved to cater to gamers.
- Astro Bot has sold 1.5 million units and might join other PlayStation titles in receiving adaptations.
Building on the recent surge of success in video game adaptations, such as “The Last of Us” and Amazon’s “Fallout”, Sony is considering expanding its gaming realm further with a potential movie or TV series based on “Astro Bot”. Not every adaptation of cherished video games has proven to be a hit. For instance, Uwe Boll’s 2008 adaptation of the well-known first-person shooter series “Far Cry”, despite having a $30 million budget, only managed to gross less than $800,000 worldwide.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen an improvement in video game adaptations, moving beyond just meeting past standards and instead creating movies and shows that genuinely cater to gamers, not just Hollywood executives. For instance, films like “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Detective Pikachu,” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” have been well-received. Now, it seems like the critically-acclaimed game developed by Team Asobi could be the next one on the list, as suggested by PlayStation Productions lead.
An Astro Bot Movie or TV Series Is Being Considered by Sony

In an interview with Variety, the head of PlayStation Productions, Asad Qizilbash, stated that they are seriously considering turning the popular video game title Astro Bot into a movie or TV series. When asked about how they decide which games are suitable for adaptation and if it’s a risk worth taking, Qizilbash explained that since Astro Bot won several awards last year, including Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024 and the D.I.C.E. Award for Game of the Year at the 28th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, it has gained a dedicated fanbase. “For us,” he said, “it’s about saying, ‘We’ve created a fantastic game. It’s gaining a following. It’s winning awards.’ These are signs for us that we want to expand and grow this franchise and its intellectual property.
It’s become increasingly evident over the past five to six years that successfully adapting video games into films can lead to massive popularity and growth. This shift in Hollywood is significant, as it’s now recognized that high-quality content can be derived from gaming. Consequently, there’s a growing confidence within the film industry, as they recognize that innovative story ideas are emerging from video games. In fact, I firmly believe that some of the most compelling stories today are being developed in the world of video games.
By November 2024, Astro Bot had sold 1.5 million copies, placing it among the top-selling PlayStation 5 games. Given this success, it’s logical that Sony might consider creating a new version or adaptation of the family-friendly platformer, Astro Bot. However, Qizilbash mentioned that they don’t solely base their decisions on awards and nominations. Instead, some intellectual properties (IPs) have compelling stories that creators are eager to adapt. This aspect could potentially apply to Astro Bot since its games aren’t heavily narrative-driven but follow the adventures of a charming robot, Astro, as he embarks on quests to rescue lost Bots, gather spaceship parts, and combat aliens. The success of the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie shows that sometimes, even the most straightforward concepts can lead to great adaptations.
Apart from Astro Bot, PlayStation Productions isn’t holding just one exciting project. They also have adaptations of God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Gravity Rush, Horizon, and Days Gone in the works. It looks like fans of video game adaptations are going to have a feast for quite some time.
