In Astro Bot: Save the Day, you take on the role of a little platforming robot named Astro. Your mission is to travel through various planets, rescuing other bots and putting an end to an alien menace. The game features a simple storyline that gets you right into the action, with a variety of delightfully themed platforming worlds.
Back in 2018 the world was introduced to Astro Bot, a little platforming robot who jumps around various worlds rescuing other bots in peril. This first entry in a future household name though was exclusively a PlayStation VR game, meaning those who weren’t diving into virtual worlds like myself missed out. Two years later another Astro game arrived, but this time it was infinitely more accessible. Every single lucky PS5 owner was greeted by Astro’s Playroom when they booted up their new console, and the short platforming experience was almost unanimously loved thanks to its use of the new DualSense controller and its delightful references to other important games throughout the history of the PlayStation. Now back for a third time, Astro Bot returns in Astro Bot – a new full sized 3D platformer that’s a joyous celebration of gaming as a whole.
“Our Heroic Adventure in Space: A Tale of PS5 Spaceship”
If you’ve experienced Astro’s Playroom before, you’ll find yourself right away comfortable controlling Astro on this fresh journey. The skills of Astro are nearly the same as in the previous edition, so you’ll be leaping, floating, and spinning across the cosmos. It won’t take long for you to feel completely at ease navigating our hero around the game’s incredibly diverse levels and searching for collectibles. Once you’re settled in, that’s when the real excitement starts!
“Variety is the spice of life in Astro Bot”
In Astro Bot, each new item handed to me was a testament to the fact that many games would thrive with one idea this impressive. The boxing gloves, controlled by the left and right triggers, could be utilized for swinging off certain platforms or propelling myself from colored blobs. A watch was also provided, enabling time manipulation to navigate quickly moving platforms. Additionally, a dog’s jetpack launched me at high speed and could break through glass, while monkey arms allowed climbing between banana-shaped anchor points. These tools (and many more) were rarely given all at once but were so skillfully designed and enjoyable that I would attempt to activate them in subsequent stages because they felt like essential parts of my repertoire
Here’s an example of how you can rephrase the phrase “While making your way from the beginning of a level to the end is the main goal of Astro Bot” in simpler, easier-to-read language:
Joy is the word more than any other I’d use to describe Astro Bot. Be it the joy of using your spin attack to spin around a nut shaped enemy in a delightful flourish, the joy of fighting an incredibly creative boss or the joy of successfully taking on a tricky platforming challenge level and being awarded an exciting new dressed up bot for doing so. Each of the game’s five worlds ends in a stage entirely modelled around a popular PlayStation game, and you’d better believe that every single one of these injected pure unfiltered joy right into my heart. I’m not sure a game has ever made me feel more like a giddy little kid than Astro Bot.
If there is ever any time you feel down in life, the one place you know you’ll be able to cheer yourself up is the hub area of Astro’s Bot. The Crash Site is an area that initially seems barren with nothing worth exploring, but every bot you rescue will eventually come and live in this little desert haven. By spending coins in the gacha machine, you’ll be given accessories for your dressed-up bots based on the video games they’re from, and when you interact with them from then on, they’ll react in a new special way. There are also extra secrets to uncover in this hub area, which you can access by commanding your bots to help you in an almost Pokémon-esque way once you’ve gathered enough of them. Swinging off a rope made up of popular gaming characters to reach a new area, or running up a wall made of stacked gaming heroes just never ceases to delight
Among the standout aspects when Astro’s Playroom debuted was its masterful utilization of the DualSense’s capabilities, and it seems that Team Asobi has maintained this excellence in the latest version. Traversing glassy surfaces and experiencing the vibrations from your precise footsteps reverberating through the controller remains an incredible sensation. The sounds you hear through the built-in speakers, like the delicate tinkling noises, continue to be a magical part of the experience. Furthermore, the adaptive triggers, assigned to special items in the game, are a joy to use and further solidify Astro’s Playroom as an exceptional showcase of this technology at its best
Any critique of Astro Bot would be incomplete without highlighting its stunning graphics and audio, which are truly exceptional. The vibrant environments are a visual treat, boasting incredible visual effects that make some of the game’s dramatic scenes absolutely breathtaking. Even the tiniest sound effects and background music are meticulously crafted, with several melodies that would rival any carefully selected Spotify playlist
Nearly every aspect of Astro Bot resonates with delight, making it hard to find fault. However, some players might not be fond of its motion control features, which can be easily adjusted or disabled in the settings if preferred. As for the game’s hint about certain bot costumes originating from other games, while I’d appreciate a bit more clarity, it’s not a significant issue that detracts from the overall enjoyment of the game
“Astro Bot: Save Our Endangered Friends” – A delightful platformer set within the vast expanse of the animal kingdom, featuring an array of beautiful visuals and a plethora of video game references that consistently amuse me. The creativity and diversity of the game is absolutely breathtaking, and the quest for collectibles is a thrilling adventure. “Astro Bot: Save Our Endangered Friends” is now one of my all-time favorites
