Despite being far from Astro’s initial escapade, it wasn’t just another basic tech demo or VR trial run. Instead, it promised a grand new journey for Astro that showcased everything PlayStation had to offer. Upon its launch, players appeared to develop an affection for the game. Given this success, it’s likely we’ll see more Astro Bot installments from Team Asobi in the future.

On the other hand, upcoming Astro Bot games might find themselves in a tricky position. At this moment, the creative path that Team Asobi intends for the franchise remains unclear. This game was primarily designed as a tribute to the brand and focused on restoring a PlayStation 5. If the studio decides to repeat this formula, there’s a risk of being labeled repetitive. However, if they create something drastically different from what has been seen before, it might not receive the same level of praise.

The “Astro Bot” series started in 2013 with a collection of mini-games called “The Playroom” on the PlayStation 4. In 2016, the concept was further developed into “The Playroom VR”, which served a similar purpose for the PSVR. Due to its popularity, it led to the creation of a full-fledged game by Team Asobi in 2018.

Back in the day, I found myself completely immersed in the thrilling virtual reality adventure called Astro Bot Rescue Mission. This game took me on a journey through various worlds, all in an attempt to rescue Astro’s missing crew. It quickly climbed the ranks as one of the top VR games out there. Naturally, the creators didn’t stop at just one game, and in 2020, they unveiled Astro’s Playroom, which came pre-installed on every PS5. This title was not only a fun platformer but also served as a showcase for the new controller technology. Fast forward to 2024, and I was ecstatic to dive back into the world of Astro Bot with the full-length platformer that received critical acclaim!

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but sing praises for Astro Bot, a game that took the charm of those captivating tech demos and magnified it into an unforgettable platforming journey. In this galactic adventure, I find myself once again tasked with rescuing Astro’s crew scattered across various galaxies. But that’s not all! The ultimate goal is to restore our PS5 mothership and delve into the rich history of PlayStation through intriguing collectibles, one-of-a-kind levels, delightful little robots, and a host of other engaging elements. And with its impressive sales figures, it’s clear that there are countless more adventures on the horizon!

Astro Bot’s Next Step Seems Unclear

It appears that the future of Astro Bot remains unclear. There’s a possibility that Team Asobi might revisit the tech demo roots of the franchise and introduce new hardware such as PSVR 2. However, given the full-fledged platformer experience players have enjoyed, returning to smaller adventures could seem underwhelming. While there are numerous paths for platformers to explore, Astro Bot’s unique approach in elevating the brand made it stand out as something exceptional.

Currently, Sony isn’t planning on releasing a PlayStation 6 anytime soon, nor does it seem like they’re working on any major new hardware projects at the moment. This means that Astro, our trusted repairman, won’t find any new gadgets from different galaxies to fix. Furthermore, repeating the same formula for two PlayStation entries could make the brand feel less fresh and exciting. To win back the audience, Team Asobi needs to introduce something novel, but if it veers too far from what fans love, it might not spark the same level of excitement.
