Astro Bot, released by Sony in late 2024, has achieved remarkable fame since then. With positive reviews from critics, impressive sales figures, and multiple Game of the Year awards, Astro Bot has captured the hearts of players across various age groups. Its innovative platforming mechanics and heartfelt tributes to Sony’s rich past make it one of the top games currently available on PlayStation 5.
Based on the popularity of Astro’s Playroom and its successor, Astro Bot, it seems that Astro Bot is now the leading platformer series for PlayStation consoles. Given that Sony has been focusing on larger, darker, and more spectacular games, Astro Bot offers a chance to return to simpler, retro-style platform gaming. While the success of Astro Bot may encourage Sony to continue the series, it doesn’t mean they should neglect other platform franchises like LittleBigPlanet.
LittleBigPlanet Can Co-Exist Alongside Astro Bot
LittleBigPlanet Was Sony’s Astro Bot Before Astro Bot
Prior to Astro Bot becoming popular on the PlayStation console, LittleBigPlanet was Sony’s primary platformer series on the PlayStation 3. The initial games were among the most adored titles on Sony’s seventh-generation console, delivering a universal appeal during a time when Sony’s in-house productions were maturing. The franchise persisted on the PlayStation 4 with its third installment, although Media Molecule, the main developer, had less involvement this time around.
As the developer shifted its attention towards “Dreams” in 2020, the “LittleBigPlanet” series persisted with “Sackboy: A Big Adventure” on PlayStation 5. Now under the care of Sumo Digital, this game marked a shift for the franchise, taking on the form of a linear 3D platformer rather than the side-scrolling games that came before it. Additionally,
LittleBigPlanet’s Creative Elements Set It Apart From Astro Bot
As a huge fan, it was a bit disappointing when I discovered that with Astro’s Playroom pre-installed on every PlayStation 5, it might have overshadowed the initial excitement for Sackboy: A Big Adventure at the console’s launch. And let’s not forget about Astro Bot’s release, which seems to have somewhat pushed the LittleBigPlanet series into the background for Sony lately. Yet, there’s ample opportunity for Sony to keep this beloved franchise thriving, and the success of Astro Bot shouldn’t deter them from creating more LittleBigPlanet games in the future.
To put it simply, LittleBigPlanet stands out from games like Astro Bot due to its focus on creativity. While both are enjoyable platformers, what truly sets LittleBigPlanet apart is its level editor feature, enabling players to craft their own stages and share them with others online. The appeal of creative platformers remains strong, as demonstrated by Nintendo’s thriving success with Super Mario Maker 2. Therefore, a new version of LittleBigPlanet could find a comfortable place among similar games currently available on the market.
Astro Bot’s success shouldn’t dissuade Sony from making more LittleBigPlanet games.
LittleBigPlanet Could Be The 2D Brother To Astro Bot’s 3D Gameplay
LittleBigPlanet could comfortably fit alongside Astro Bot by going back to its pre-2020 style. While Sackboy: A Big Adventure was the first game in the series to be a fully 3D platformer, LittleBigPlanet has always been a side-scrolling 2.5D franchise. With Astro Bot now filling the role of a 3D platformer for Sony, LittleBigPlanet can stand alongside it as a complementary side-scroller, ensuring that Sony has a solid presence in both types of platforming games.
Regardless of whether Sony decides to further develop “LittleBigPlanet” or if “Astro Bot” takes its place, Sackboy will continue to make appearances across various Sony games. It’s worth noting that the success of “Astro Bot” doesn’t necessarily eclipse that of “LittleBigPlanet”, leaving room for a new title to distinguish itself from PlayStation’s other platforming masterpiece. Fingers crossed that Sony keeps delivering platformer enjoyment and appeal with both “Astro Bot” and “LittleBigPlanet”.
