At Least 3 Games Are Having Their Servers Shutdown Next Month

Highlights

  • Servers for WWE 2K23, NHL 20, and Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem will be shut down by the end of September, leaving achievements unattainable.
  • Developers may pull the plug on online games due to small player bases or lack of profitability.

As a dedicated gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and frustration as I face yet another wave of online game shutdowns. The impending demise of servers for WWE 2K23, NHL 20, and Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem is a grim reminder that no game lasts forever, no matter how much we cherish them.

As a dedicated gamer with years of experience under my belt, I find myself saddened by the news that several games I hold dear are set to lose their online functionality by the end of September. Among them is WWE 2K23, a game I’ve spent countless hours mastering and enjoying the competitive multiplayer aspect. It’s disheartening to know that soon, I won’t be able to earn any more achievements tied to online play, as they will be removed forever.

It’s common for online video games to eventually shut down due to various reasons such as declining player bases or lack of profitability. This was recently seen with the closure of the Xbox 360 online store, and now some games are permanently losing their online functionality, rendering many player accomplishments inaccessible.

The Xbox community site True Achievements has announced that certain online servers for three different games will be shut down in September 2024. Specifically, four separate servers across these games will be closing. Players who are trying to complete their achievements in the online modes of these games have until then to do so, as the closures are set to begin on September 3. So, gamers should act quickly if they want to earn any remaining achievements before the servers go offline.

Several Games Lose Online Functionality Next Month

  • Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem – September 3
  • NHL 20 – September 16
  • WWE 2K23 (Xbox Series X and Xbox One) – September 30

Although the WWE video game series has encountered some difficulties in recent times, WWE 2K23 has received a Very Positive review on Steam, indicating it’s regaining the affection of many fans who were disheartened by the reception of WWE 2K20 several years ago. However, with the launch of WWE 2K24 earlier this year, publisher 2K appears to be pouring all their efforts into that game and phasing out online support for its predecessor.

It’s plausible that Electronic Arts (EA) stopped supporting NHL 20 because it was released quite some time ago, given that there have been four newer versions of the game since then. Many players have likely shifted to playing these more recent titles, leaving NHL 20 in the past. A similar situation seems to apply to the Diablo-like action RPG, Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, as it currently only has around 50 active players on Steam.

It’s good news for gamers who enjoy completing all their game achievements: Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem has just one achievement that needs online play. In contrast, players might find it challenging with games like NHL 20, as numerous features require online play. Unfortunately, after the servers are shut down, NHL 20 will lose access to at least 22 achievements.
