As a die-hard gamer, I’m super stoked about Atari snagging the rights to five epic Ubisoft franchises: “I Am Alive”, “Child of Eden”, “Cold Fear”, “Grow Home”, and “Grow Up”. This is like a dream come true for us fans who’ve been missing out on these classics since they were under the Ubisoft banner. It’s a hint that we might get to play them again, this time on our modern gaming rigs!
Over the past few years, the gaming industry has faced some tough times, and this struggle is evident in Ubisoft’s case as well. In the recent fiscal year (2024-2025), Ubisoft reported a significant loss amounting to $177.9 million, with its revenue plummeting approximately 20.5% compared to the previous period. Conversely, Atari has seen a surge in its revenue during the same fiscal year, growing an impressive 63%. As of now, Atari appears to be on an upward growth trend.
According to recent reports by IGN, Atari has taken over the ownership of games like “I Am Alive”, “Child of Eden”, “Cold Fear”, “Grow Home”, and “Grow Up” from Ubisoft. Atari plans to re-release these titles under their own publishing label, making them available on newer gaming platforms. However, this does not imply that new games within these franchises are in development; it mainly suggests that the mentioned five games are expected to appear on current generation consoles.
Ubisoft Games Acquired By Atari
- I Am Alive
- Child of Eden
- Cold Fear
- Grow Home
- Grow Up
Some of the timeless Ubisoft games bought by Atari didn’t quite achieve blockbuster status; instead, they fell into the category of either modest triumphs or disappointing sales. For instance, the survival horror game “Cold Fear,” launched in 2005, managed to sell only 70,000 copies within its initial year. Another example is the rhythm game “Child of Eden,” which debuted in 2011 and struggled to gain commercial popularity. On a more positive note, the action-adventure title “I Am Alive” from 2012 was quite successful, becoming one of the top sellers on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. However, it never received a follow-up. The platform games “Grow Home” and its sequel “Grow Up,” too, managed to find their audience and earned positive feedback.
Lately, it appears that Atari is on a buying spree. Just last month, Atari took control as the major shareholder of Thunderful Group AB, a company that owns well-known games and franchises like “Lost in Random” and the “SteamWorld” series.
Instead of spreading its resources widely, it appears that Ubisoft is choosing to prioritize its major projects and establish strategic partnerships. Not long ago, they even established a subsidiary supported by Tencent, to manage their popular intellectual properties. Some of the notable series under the French publisher’s wing include Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, Far Cry, among others. The future will reveal how Ubisoft adapts to market fluctuations.
