As a die-hard Call of Duty fan with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say this weekend’s Esports World Cup in Saudi Arabia was nothing short of exhilarating! The grand final between Atlanta FaZe and 100 Thieves (LA Thieves squad) was a clash of titans that had me on the edge of my seat.
As a seasoned Call of Duty player and avid esports enthusiast, I must say that attending the Esports World Cup in Saudi Arabia was an unforgettable experience for me. Having followed the best teams globally throughout their careers, it was surreal to finally witness them battle it out on a grand stage in Riyadh. The energy in the venue was electrifying, with 16 top squads vying for their share of the massive $1.8 million prize pool.
As a long-time follower and player of the Call of Duty League, I must say that this past weekend was nothing short of thrilling. It’s not every day you witness Toronto Ultra getting knocked out of the playoffs by 100 Thieves or Cloud9 falling flat against OpTic once again. These events brought back memories of my own competitive gaming days, where unexpected upsets and familiar disappointments were all too common. The excitement that comes with these matches is unparalleled, making them feel just as significant as some of the biggest events in the Call of Duty League calendar.
Monumental Performance
Many people didn’t find it appealing, but there’s no arguing that the Esports World Cup has been quite thrilling recently. This weekend, Modern Warfare 3 took center stage, featuring top-tier CDL and Challenger level teams vying for a substantial monetary reward. As the preliminary rounds unfolded, eight teams were eliminated in the initial round.
- OMiT Brooklyn
- Vegas Legion
- G2 Esports
- Gentle Mates
- Stallions
- Team Heretics
- Lore Gaming
- Team Falcons
As the tournament advanced to the playoffs, it was only the CDL teams left competing, giving off a vibe reminiscent of COD Champs. Many spectators anticipated that OpTic Gaming would clinch the top position following their victories against OMiT, Carolina Royal Ravens, and Cloud9. However, Atlanta FaZe demonstrated an unstoppable force, ultimately proving too strong for the current world champions to conquer.
As a gamer, I found myself hyped to the max as the grand final unfolded between Atlanta FaZe and LA Thieves’ squad, also known as 100 Thieves. It had been ages since these two powerhouses faced off in a tournament, but the anticipation was palpable as we got underway. The road to the GF wasn’t easy for 100 Thieves; they took out Toronto Ultra and Vancouver Surge along the way, building an impressive momentum that carried them into the grand final.
Regrettably, Atlanta FaZe’s respawn game was exceptionally strong, allowing them to claim the initial and second rounds of Hardpoint. 100 Thieves managed two significant victories on the maps in the opening rounds of Control and Search, but another win by FaZe in the second Search appeared to almost assure their victory.
In the second phase of Control competition, Atlanta FaZe continued their strong performance with a 3-2 scoreline (best-of-seven), facing tough resistance from 100 Thieves. However, FaZe proved overwhelming on the Invasion map, making it difficult for 100 Thieves to keep up. Consequently, the team consisting of Cellium, aBeZy, Simp, and Drazah claimed the tournament title and celebrated their $600,000 victory.
