Online, there’s been a release of the newest preview for the upcoming open-world survival shooter by Rebellion, titled Atomfall. This seven-minute clip offers a glimpse into the game’s primary features such as talking to non-player characters (NPCs), creating and enhancing equipment, completing missions, and managing factions.
You’re in for a treat with this highly anticipated game scheduled for release in March, and it’s even better news that it will be available on Xbox Game Pass on its launch day! I had the privilege of trying out Atomfall at Gamescom and chatting with its creators. Let me assure you, the quality of this game is nothing short of exceptional.
And yes, it’s kind of like Fallout in the UK.
Prepare for Atomfall
Atomfall bears a resemblance to Fallout, yet it’s distinctly its own creation. The backdrop is the picturesque Lake District in the UK, offering a visually stunning and verdant gaming experience. As an alternate history game, it imaginatively transforms the real-life Windscale Nuclear Disaster of 1957 into something otherworldly and dreamlike.
In Atomfall, players will engage in intense battles against ruthless raiders in post-apocalyptic surface communities, as well as venture into warped, terrifying underground bunkers. The game promises a rich and dynamic experience, focusing primarily on survival. As such, the core elements you’d normally find are included:
- Scavenging, buying, and bartering for resources
- Upgrading and repairing weapons and other items
- Looting and trading across the open world
- Building a character that suits your playstyle
- Managing weight, health, and tools

I’m really into the Fallout series, and I can’t help but feel the burden as we wait for Fallout 5. However, Atomfall isn’t exactly a full-blown post-apocalyptic game in a nuclear wasteland, but it’s very similar. What makes it stand out is that it has a Fallout-like appearance, with robots, unusual weapons, quirky faction members, and a complex, meandering narrative filled with additional content.
In some ways, it’s a blend between Fallout and STALKER.
When I tried Atomfall at Gamescom, I was captivated right away. The game not only boasts an impressive visual appeal but also offers a smooth gaming experience. As a survival game, it emphasizes strategic decision-making. For instance, do you choose to wield a cricket bat against a guard in a settlement to grab a gun and then engage others with a few rounds, or opt for stealthily eliminating everyone in the camp without being detected? Or perhaps you elect to bypass the entire encounter altogether? Ultimately, the choice is yours.
Atomfall is slated for launch on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC on March 27th. The game will eventually be available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 as well.
