Atomfall’s second story DLC will see you hunted by an absolutely furious robot among some War of the Worlds-style red weed

In September, Atomfall is set to receive another serving of story-based DLC. This comes after the launch of its Wicker Man-inspired Wicked Isle. Named The Red Strain, this expansion appears to draw inspiration from War of the Worlds, a renowned British cultural reference. In this expansion, you’ll be exploring a “top-secret new location” that has been overrun by peculiar crimson foliage.

Moving forward, there isn’t much known about The Red Strain from Rebellion yet. However, I can confirm that the robot portrayed will have a convincingly angry appearance. To accompany the announcement, Rebellion released a brief thirty-second teaser trailer (viewable below), which primarily focuses on this imposing robot preparing its weapons and glaring menacingly into the camera.

As a seasoned gamer, I can’t help but ponder if the latest adversary we’re facing will have me dodging it just like the infamous Mr. X’s robots. At first glance, it seems a bit sluggish to pose a consistent threat. But hey, I’m no stranger to the unexpected in this gaming world! And just to clear the air for any detail-oriented players out there, yes, I’ve noticed that robot’s cranial dome houses a human brain, making it more of a cyborg than a regular machine.

As a gamer, I can say that adding persistent threats would definitely make Atomfall more engaging. I enjoyed the basic gameplay, especially when navigating the labyrinthine subterranean research facility nestled in its Lake District environment. However, thematically and mechanically, it felt like a jumble of concepts, none of which were fully fleshed out or developed to their full potential.

Fraser Brown expressed a similar sentiment in his review of Atomfall. He noted that due to its ’50s-inspired retro-futuristic environment, the game has often been compared to Fallout since its initial announcement. However, he pointed out that the comparisons are primarily superficial. In fact, he suggested that this shallowness might be Atomfall’s most distinctive trait: while it boasts numerous systems and evident inspirations, it seldom delves into them and struggles to establish a unique identity for itself.

Despite not hindering Atomfall from becoming a commercial triumph, which is probably the reason for the ongoing release of downloadable content, it’s worth noting that Rebellion’s survival shooter has outperformed expectations, having amassed over 1.5 million players since its launch – making it the studio’s most successful game in 32 years. In fact, Atomfall exceeded even the estimates of Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley, which implies that we can anticipate further iterations of Atomfall moving forward.

On September 16, you can expect the arrival of The Red Strain. Further information regarding this release will be unveiled as we approach the date.
