In simpler terms, the game “Atomic Heart” had various aspects, but its boss battles were often more about conversation than action. Although the graphics were stunning and the tension was high, some of these boss battles didn’t provide the level of challenge that makes winning feel truly satisfying. Interestingly, it seems that the sequel, “Atomic Heart 2“, aims to address this issue by redesigning its major confrontations to be more difficult and, consequently, more rewarding when you eventually overcome them.
In a recent chat with Game Rant, Rob Bagratuni – head of Mundfish Studio – shared plenty of insights about the upcoming game, Atomic Heart 2, including what players might encounter. He also delved into the specifics of the boss battles in Atomic Heart 2, explaining how the studio aims to make them tougher than ever before.
Atomic Heart 2 Is Ramping Up Its Boss Fights
The game, Atomic Heart, isn’t inherently simple, but its boss battles were more focused on cinematic elements rather than technical ones initially. These bosses had a significant amount of health and showy design for their arenas, making the encounters more about surviving than mastering the mechanics. However, Mundfish aims to change this in Atomic Heart 2, and they’ve already started experimenting with new approaches in the latest DLC packs for the first game.
As stated by Bagratuni, the upcoming sequel is focusing on enhancing overall interaction significantly. This, however, includes revising the design of boss battles too.
In our development, we’re striving for a more immersive and multi-dimensional approach to role-playing game (RPG) aspects and progression. Our aim is to provide players with greater flexibility in shaping their characters through skill trees and advancement, but we’re also working on enhancing depth and freedom across the entire game, including core mechanics. We’re targeting a richer gaming experience overall, with a particular focus on intense boss battles. The positive response to the last boss fight in Atomic Heart’s third DLC has shown us that players enjoy such challenges, so we aim to make the boss fights in Atomic Heart 2 even more demanding.
Bagratuni and the Mundfish team were particularly impressed by the player reactions to the increased difficulty in the final boss of Atomic Heart‘s third DLC. Recognizing a chance to improve, they decided to focus on ensuring that the grandeur of their boss battles translates mechanically as well. Instead of just adding extra health or aesthetically pleasing attacks, Atomic Heart 2 aims to make each battle distinct, keeping players engaged and growing with every major confrontation. Essentially, this approach calls for fights that require more than just survival skills; they should challenge and encourage the player’s development at every attempt.
Bagratuni shared that Mundfish was greatly influenced by the way streamers and content creators reacted during tough boss battles. They closely observed these reactions to understand how players handle setbacks, challenges, and ultimate success. What they saw matched their expectations perfectly.
We plunged into the live-streams of content creators as they tackled the toughest level of the final battle. Their struggles resulted in intense reactions, making it a thrilling spectacle to behold. It was challenging, yet exhilarating, and left a lasting impression on them. Since then, they’ve been quite vocal about this experience in their streams. Inspired by this, we’re eager to enhance the sequel’s boss fights, aiming to make them more impactful and even more grueling.
According to Bagratuni’s comments, Atomic Heart 2 isn’t just about inflicting pain on players for amusement, but rather aims to create boss fights that offer a significant emotional reward. By enhancing RPG progression, allowing for varied playstyles, and implementing mechanisms that boost player control, the aim is to make every significant battle a meaningful accomplishment for gamers. If Mundfish manages this, those challenging boss battles could become one of the sequel’s most distinctive features.
