Each installment of Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan consistently shocks us with heartbreaking and gory demises, leaving us yet to find our footing again.
Although the creator’s scheme for opening a spa with our tears went smoothly, certain character deaths were more poignant than others.
The less predictable the final moments of certain characters, the greater the effect they had on those who survived. Additionally, some characters departed without saying goodbye, which left both their fellow characters and readers with lingering sorrow that remains unresolved.
Let’s reflect on the heart-wrenching demises in Attack on Titan that continue to stir deep emotions within us, long after we’ve watched them unfold.
To avoid major plot twists being ruined, it’s best to read the Attack on Titan manga or watch the anime before reviewing this list, as it contains significant spoilers.
10. Sasha Blouse
Everyone’s Favorite Potato Girl
Among the forthcoming entries, Sasha Blouse experienced the least agonizing demise, with her friends present as she passed away. Yet, this fact does not diminish the intense emotional turmoil her death caused, making her an ideal choice to initiate our list.
Following a reunion with her friends and fellow Scouts aboard the airship, she was unexpectedly struck down by Gabi Braun, leaving no chance for her to react to the unfolding events.
Just prior to Sasha’s passing, Connie embraced Jean and Sasha warmly, thanking them both for their survival.
Her death carried a profound and unexpected emotional impact since it was unforeseen for Gabi to take Sasha’s life immediately following such a heartwarming scene. Additionally, it was surprising that she would pull the trigger in a skyship swarming with adversaries armed to the teeth.
Instead of providing just humor, Sasha’s departure signified a darker and more realistic shift in the narrative of Attack on Titan.
9. Bertholtd Hoover
Still Can’t Pronounce His Name

Despite Bertholdt’s complex nature marked by guilt, he played the role of an adversary due to his actions involving widespread killing, which he rationalized through the harshness of his purpose or ideology.
In due course, Armin Arlert consumed him, having transformed into a pure titan, as the man frantically pleaded for aid from Reiner, Annie, and their old companions.
Surprisingly, even as Armin prepared to consume him, Berthold’s brief, unexpected smile momentarily took me aback.
Upon my return to that location, I deduced that he must have recognized Eren and their old companions on the rooftop, as he believed they were coming to save him.
Yet, Bertholdt wasn’t aware he possessed a Titan serum, and it wasn’t Armin who was to inherit his Titan abilities that made his demise all the more heart-wrenching.
Or,
Bertholdt didn’t realize he had a Titan injection, and it was Armin who would have assumed his Titan abilities that amplified the tragedy of his passing.
8. Carla Jaeger
Could Have Stopped Rumbling In Seconds!

Through her tender love as a mother and wife, Carla Jaeger’s passing served as the foundation for the storyline in Attack on Titan, significantly stirring up Eren’s desire to annihilate every Titan.
In the chaos caused by numerous Titans destroying the Shiganshina district wall, Carla urged Hannes to safeguard Eren and Mikasa, choosing to remain behind herself.
In the end, she meets a tragic fate by being devoured by the Smiling Titan, while Eren looks on helplessly and is subsequently pulled away by Hannes.
Her death functioned as a catalyst for Eren and the Attack on Titan storyline, but I came close to tears when she held back from shouting at Hannes for aid. Unbeknownst to me, this was merely the beginning of more intense events.
7. Hannes
100 Points For The Effort!

Similar to the previous instance, Eren once again finds himself in a heart-wrenching situation where he witnessed a dear one being taken away, yet remained powerless to intervene.
Previously, Hannes had failed to shield Carla Jaeger from the Smiling Titan. However, with renewed determination, he couldn’t resist stepping in this time, as both Eren and Mikasa were hurt and dismounted from their horses within the Titan Forest.
Hannes attempted to bring her down using his 3D movement equipment, managing to partially disable her by cutting her heel area.
In an open space, he found it difficult to grab onto anything close by or keep a secure distance from the Smiling Titan.
In the end, the Titan with a Smile ended up capturing and eliminating him, thus denying his quest for revenge on behalf of Eren’s mother.
Observing him being consumed was unsettling enough, but it became even more troubling when he started sobbing and frantically biting his own hand in a bid to transform.
6. Marlo Freudenberg
Do And Most Willingly, Die!

Instead of opting for a tranquil existence within the corrupt Military Police Regiment, Marlo Fruedenberg made the choice to uphold justice, bravely navigating his path towards the Scout Regiment. Unfortunately, he met an untimely end.
In essence, he served as the unofficial head during the suicidal attack on the Beast Titan, orchestrated by Commander Erwin, which provided a temporary respite for Levi Ackerman.
As the Beast Titan rained down stones on its chosen target, Marlo braced himself for his impending demise. Yet, an unexpected thought crossed his mind – a recollection of his old workmate, Hitch.
Before Marlo managed to finish his line of thinking or perhaps acknowledge his feelings for Hitch, as some spectators assumed, a stone struck his face on the right side, immediately ending his life.
5. Petra Ral
Falling Star

Petra Ral was an indispensable part of the initial Levi team, earning recognition for 52 Titan eliminations and renowned for her swift reactions.
Tragically, she met her end at the hands of the Female Titan, as the Scouts were still largely unaware of the Titans’ hidden powers during that time.
In a state of amazement, Petra couldn’t believe how swiftly the Titan managed to mend her injured eye following the attack by the Scouts. Taking advantage of this situation, the Female Titan swiftly closed the gap between herself and the startled Petra, mercilessly ending her life against a tree.
Despite Petra’s passing being a deeply emotional event, it struck me even harder when Levi remained silent upon his return, as he listened to her father joyfully discussing her, oblivious to her demise. It’s clear that Petra’s death had one of the most profound and unsettling effects on Levi.
4. Nanaba
Childhood Scarier Than Titans?

After living for more than five years, Nanaba had become a highly skilled and seasoned Scout, and the thought of her passing was deeply unsettling to consider during my initial viewing.
Prior to meeting her unfortunate end, Nanaba along with her group successfully eliminated eight Titans, thus averting a Titan attack on their subordinates. Regrettably, this was not sufficient…
As soon as she found out she was out of fuel and snapped both her ODM blades while rescuing Gelgar from a Pure Titan, she became the prey of a swarm of Pure Titans who eagerly attacked and devoured her.
In the midst of being torn apart by colossal beings, she pleaded for her father’s pardon, a request that seemed to hint at a possible history of abuse during her childhood.
I remember this specific death scene vividly because it was portrayed with a haunting sense of authenticity.
3. Miche Zacharius
Couldn’t Smell His Looming Death

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, I found Miche Zacharius’ demise serving as an alarming reminder that ignorance can lead to peril, even for the mightiest of characters with unparalleled sensory abilities.
His destiny was irrevocably determined as soon as the Beast Titan sent him tumbling from a skyscraper, landing in the jaws of a Pure Titan who swallowed one of his limbs.
Overcome with terror as the Beast Titan began speaking, Miche steeled himself for battle once it moved away. However, he failed to notice that he was encircled by the Pure Titans he had previously marked on his map.
Watching in horror, it was both shocking and unsettling to witness him being swallowed up by a swarm of Titans, as he pleaded for mercy from them.
OR
It was a chilling and eye-opening spectacle when he was eaten alive by the crowd of Titans, while he desperately asked them to spare him.
OR
The scene was both shocking and disconcerting as he was gobbled up by a horde of Titans, begging them for mercy.
Initially, his cold demeanor made me question the authenticity of his response to death. However, upon reevaluation, I found myself moved by the genuine emotional depth portrayed in the scene.
2. Fay Jaeger
Sorry, But Who Let The Dogs Out?

Grisha Jaeger’s sister Fay’s demise served as a stark illustration of the deeply-rooted racial prejudice against Eldians by the Marleyans, a bias that spanned over hundreds of years.
Growing up as a naive, optimistic child who knew little about life beyond the confinement of the internment zone, it was deeply distressing to witness her endure such hardship simply because she followed her sibling’s guidance and was labeled an Eldian.
The Marleyan officers mercilessly handed her over to the dogs, while another officer brutally beat Grisha Jaeger for wandering outside the designated area without authorization.
The situation became even more frustrating for Fay as the officer led her away from Grisha, mentioning that he was taking her home instead.
Among all deaths depicted briefly – just one frame in the anime or a single panel in the manga – it was Fay’s demise that left the deepest emotional imprint on Grisha.
1. Ramzi
Caught In A Crossfire!
It is unfortunate that children should never become casualties of war, yet most innocent lives often fail to survive the turmoil, among them were Ramzi and his cherished friend, Halil.
Among all submissions, I found Ramzi’s demise particularly harsh and seemingly unjustified, considering he didn’t engage in the power conflict between Eldia and Marley.
In the wake of the catastrophic Rumbling, a massive foot belonging to the Colossal Titan came crashing down on him, burying him under debris. Tragically, he had just witnessed the demise of his dearest friend before that happened.
In the storyline involving Marley, Eren came to Ramzi’s rescue when a gang of men were assaulting him for pickpocketing. This was an effort by Eren to alter the future. However, once he understood that it wouldn’t make any difference, he regretfully apologized and escorted Ramzi back home, shedding tears along the way.
Yet, since Ramzi wasn’t either Eldian or Marleyan, he found himself unable to comprehend the language, which underscored the tragic irony of his predicament.
