As a thrilled PlayStation Plus subscriber, I’m excited to announce that starting from Tuesday, August 19, I get to play the highly-anticipated game “Sword of the Sea” at no extra cost! It’s not every day that PlayStation Plus offers day one games, but this year, we’ve been fortunate enough to have a few, and some real powerhouses too.
For 2025, some of the games included on the first day with PlayStation Plus membership have been highly praised titles such as the critically-acclaimed puzzle game “Blue Prince” and more recently, the cooperative survival game “Abiotic Factor”. Although it’s not guaranteed that these ‘day one Extra’ games will become a monthly event, the service has been quite consistent in offering them. Following “FBC: Firebreak” in June, we had “Abiotic Factor” in July, and now, “Sword of the Sea” is scheduled to join the service in August.
Beginning on Tuesday, August 19, the game titled “Sword of the Sea” will debut as a launch title in the PS Plus Extra collection. As all content within Extra is incorporated into the Premium tier, those with a Premium subscription can anticipate playing it too. For those unfamiliar, “Sword of the Sea” is the newest creation from Giant Squid, makers of “Abzu” and “The Pathless.” In this game, players employ their special hover-sword to navigate a desolate landscape they aim to rejuvenate. Mastering the hover-sword for cruising or skating will be essential for the fast-paced gameplay in “Sword of the Sea“. The game incorporates combat and platforming aspects as well, making it an engaging blend of action and exploration.
Sword of the Sea is Coming to PS Plus Extra on August 19

What truly sets Sword of the Sea apart is its captivating visuals. This game is nothing less than breathtaking, seamlessly combining enchanting blue seas with awe-inspiring desert vistas. From what we’ve seen in the trailers so far, its soundtrack is equally impressive and seems destined to make it one of the most visually stunning new game releases of the year. The game is being helmed by Matt Nava, who served as art director for Journey, which should assuage any doubts about its beauty.
As a gamer, I’m super hyped because Sword of the Sea is dropping on day one for PS Plus Extra on August 19, making it a massive day for Sony’s subscription service! But that’s not all – August 19 will also bring the debut of other new games for PS Plus Extra. However, we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to find out exactly what surprises are in store. On the flip side, some games will be leaving PS Plus Extra on August 19, such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, so subscribers should remember to enjoy these games while they’re still available!
