August 2 Is the End of an Era for APB Reloaded

Highlights

  • APB Reloaded console versions are officially shutting down on August 2.
  • Players have until that date to migrate their characters to the PC version of the game.
  • The Xbox One port of APB Reloaded has already been unplayable since early 2024 due to technical issues.

As a dedicated fan of APB Reloaded since its relaunch in 2011, I find it hard to accept that the console versions of this beloved game are officially shutting down on August 2. Having spent countless hours honing my skills as an enforcer or criminal, I have built cherished memories and formed deep connections with fellow players from around the world.

Starting August 2, which is a Friday, the console editions of APB Reloaded will no longer be operational. It is advised that players move their characters over to the PC version of this MMO by that date to continue playing.

I was initially drawn to APB: All Points Bulletin, a game reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto, created by British studio Realtime Worlds and launched as a subscription-based MMO for PC in June 2010. However, the servers were shut down mere months later, with Realtime Worlds declaring administration in August of that year. American company K2 Network stepped in to save the game, and its subsidiary Reloaded Productions relaunched it as a free-to-play MMO called APB Reloaded towards the end of 2011. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions were eventually released in June 2016 and March 2017, respectively. In 2018, California-based publisher Little Orbit acquired Reloaded Productions’ parent company.

APB Reloaded Dev Reminds Players to Transfer Their Characters to PC While They Still Can

2024 finds us in January, and Little Orbit has some news for fans like me about APB Reloaded – they’re planning to close down the console versions this coming summer. To help us out, they’ve posted on social media again as a reminder that we have until August 2nd to transfer our characters over to the PC version of the game.

Until August 2, PS4 users can continue playing “APB Reloaded.” On the other hand, the Xbox One edition of the game has been inaccessible since January 2024 due to major technical problems that the developer couldn’t resolve. As a result, the developer turned off all microtransactions for the PS4 version on February 1.

During a Q&A session in May 2024, Little Orbit and Plaion (previously known as Koch Media) revealed that the reason for closing down the console editions of APB Reloaded wasn’t solely due to technical difficulties, but also because of complex publishing issues arising from the game’s numerous ownership transitions. More precisely, neither Sony nor Microsoft enable publishers to transfer ownership of previously published titles on their respective marketplaces, making it a challenge for Plaion to complete the console adaptations of APB Reloaded.

1. Closing down the PS4 and Xbox One versions of APB Reloaded, Little Orbit may eventually bring the game back on consoles. However, if there’s no official announcement about this yet, gamers can continue playing this free-to-play MMO in the near term by downloading its Steam version instead.
