As one of the oldest British game studios, Codemasters made its name with racing franchises like Grid and Dirt, as well as licensed titles like the F1 games. In 2021, EA acquired Codemasters and gained control over the developer’s extensive back-catalog. Unfortunately, the publisher seems to be behind the recent removal of some old Codemasters games from prominent PC gaming storefront Steam.

Horizon may be an action role-playing game, but it doesn’t feature an intricate, omnipresent companion system similar to other contemporary RPGs such as Baldur’s Gate, Fallout, Persona, or The Elder Scrolls. Instead, allies will join Aloy in select quests, helping the Elisabet Sobeck clone solving puzzles, mysteries, and aiding in combat at their own discretion. Aloy cannot direct the actions of any ally, but she can influence some of their reactions to certain events and determine whether they’ll appear in certain large events, such as the Battle of the Alight. What many allies lack in combat abilities, they make up for with their complex stories, with each being able to be tiered by their character arcs, influence, and impact on Aloy and the overall Horizon narrative.

Some, like Sun Jin-Woo, evolve from the weak and powerless into unstoppable forces, meting out justice with cold precision. Others, like Nox von Reinhafer, play the game of life like a chessboard, manipulating and eliminating obstacles in a desperate bid to extend their existence. They don’t hesitate, they don’t trust easily, and they certainly don’t care about playing the hero. In the world of isekai, where only the strong survive, edgy protagonists prove that being ruthless isn’t a flaw—it’s a necessity.
