With Avatar: Fire and Ash now in theaters, the story begun in The Way of Water comes to a close. The new film immediately follows the previous one, showing the Sully family still grieving the loss of Neteyam. Although his spirit has joined Eywa, the family continues to mourn his death.
In Fire and Ash, Sully and his family face serious threats. Miles Quaritch relentlessly pursues Jake Sully, and now a new group, the Ash Na’vi, are also after him. While Jake ultimately triumphs, as heroes often do, the film’s ending still manages to surprise audiences with unexpected turns.
Kiri Takes The Lead In The Battle in Avatar: Fire And Ash
Fans Also Learn The Truth About Kiri’s Birth
Ever since Kiri appeared in Avatar: The Way of Water, fans have been curious about her origins. Since Grace wasn’t pregnant when she passed away, questions arose about how Kiri was born. Now, according to information revealed in Fire and Ash, it’s confirmed that Kiri was born without a biological father.
When the Na’vi attempted to bring Grace back to life in a cloned body using the Spirit Tree, Eywa, the guiding force of Pandora, seemingly implanted a seed within her. This means Kiri is essentially Eywa’s child, making her a uniquely special individual. This explains why Kiri has an extraordinary connection to Pandora’s plants – a connection so strong that even the most skilled Na’vi spiritual leaders are amazed by it.
Kiri quickly discovers she has a special connection to the plants and animals of Pandora. We see this in both The Way of Water and Fire and Ash. For example, in The Way of Water, she instinctively controls underwater plants to escape danger, something she’d never done before. In Fire and Ash, she uses her connection to Eywa, Pandora’s collective consciousness, to help Spider breathe, even though she didn’t know she could. It’s as if Pandora’s life force itself responds to her. Unlike other Na’vi who connect to Eywa, Eywa—and all of Pandora’s living things—seem to reach out to Kiri directly, recognizing her as a part of it all.

She Must Get Stronger To Tap Into Eywa’s Vast Consciousness

Now that we’ve learned Kiri has a special connection to Eywa, it makes sense to ask why she struggles to communicate with it. Kiri herself feels like Eywa is rejecting her, but that’s not the case. When Kiri tries to connect with Eywa, she’s also linked to the thoughts and feelings of all living things on Pandora. This massive surge of energy is actually what causes her seizures. Because Kiri is still developing, she can’t yet handle that much power, and it overwhelms her system whenever she attempts a connection.
Eywa had a specific reason for connecting with Kiri, but Kiri still needs to develop her abilities and understand what Eywa expects of her. It’s evident that Kiri shares some of Eywa’s power – Eywa controls all life on Pandora, as shown in the first Avatar film and Fire and Ash, and Kiri can do the same, though on a much smaller scale. However, after experiencing a direct connection with Eywa, Kiri’s powers significantly grow in Fire and Ash. This allows her to defeat Varang, the leader of the Ash people, in the climax. During this confrontation, Kiri’s voice changes, sounding almost as if she’s channeling Eywa herself.
What Does Eywa Want With Kiri In Avatar?
Kiri Might Be Eywa’s True Avatar
Everyone’s wondering why Eywa chose Grace to have Kiri, right? It’s the big mystery! We probably won’t get a definitive answer until Avatar 4 and 5 come out. But thinking about what Avatar really means might give us a clue. The word actually comes from Hindu beliefs, where an Avatar is like a god’s descendant or a physical form of a deity. When you put that together with Kiri and Eywa, I think it’s pretty clear that while all the Na’vi are connected to Eywa, Kiri might be the true, special Avatar – a direct manifestation of Eywa herself.
As a god, Eywa can’t—or won’t—appear in a physical body. But with Pandora facing danger from the humans, and Pandora needing a protector, Eywa has chosen a way to intervene. Instead of directly controlling all life on the moon, Eywa is connecting with the world through Kiri. If the stories are true, Kiri isn’t just Eywa’s daughter—she might be how Eywa speaks and acts on Pandora.
