Because Kiri is still developing, she can’t yet handle that much power, and it overwhelms her system whenever she attempts a connection.

Eywa had a specific reason for connecting with Kiri, but Kiri still needs to develop her abilities and understand what Eywa expects of her. It’s evident that Kiri shares some of Eywa’s power – Eywa controls all life on Pandora, as shown in the first Avatar film and Fire and Ash, and Kiri can do the same, though on a much smaller scale.
