In the upcoming films titled “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars“, Robert Downey Jr. will portray Doctor Doom. Recently released fan art gives fans a preview of how the actor might appear in Doctor Doom’s famous armor, according to current depictions in Marvel comics.
It was rumored that the plots for “Avengers 5” and “Secret Wars” might change due to Marvel Studios dropping Jonathan Majors from his role as Kang the Conqueror, who serves as the main antagonist in the MCU’s Multiverse saga, following his conviction on two counts of misdemeanor assault and harassment. At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Marvel Studios officially announced they would be taking a new approach when Robert Downey Jr. made an appearance on stage to reveal that he would reprise his role as Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four series within the MCU.
Despite the revelation that Robert Downey Jr. will portray Victor von Doom in both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, leaving fans with a sense of anticipation, several questions remain unanswered about the actor’s comeback. One such mystery revolves around the design of Doctor Doom’s armor when played by Downey Jr. To quench our curiosity, digital artist @spdrmnkyxxiii has shared an artwork depicting a comic-accurate outfit for Downey’s Doctor Doom character. Interestingly, Downey Jr.’s face in this portrayal bears the scars that Victor von Doom is famous for, which according to the comics, would prompt him to wear his signature mask.
Does the information align? Not at all. Am I thrilled? Absolutely! I’m likely still on a high from the SDCC Marvel Panel. It reminded me of the old days with all the surprises. The Doom reveal in particular seemed very similar to Hall H. We’ll find out how they justify it. I hope for a multiverse explanation instead of just Robert Downey Jr. playing a different character.
Following Majors’ dismissal, Marvel Studios found themselves needing to rethink their villain strategy for the Multiverse Saga. Many spectators suggested swapping Kang with Doctor Doom in the MCU. It was unexpected that Marvel Studios would bring back an actor as Doctor Doom, especially Downey Jr., though this was indeed the case. Some fans believe that casting Robert Downey Jr., instead of a new actor, limits the writers’ ability to faithfully adapt Doctor Doom’s extensive comic book background. This concern arises if this version of Doom is just a wicked version of Tony Stark (Iron Man). Additionally, some fans are disappointed that a Romani actor was not chosen for the role, given that Doctor Doom has Romani heritage in the comics.

Fans may have mixed reactions, but they must wait to see if any concerns will be well-founded or if Downey Jr. can impress even the skeptics. Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars is bringing the Russo Brothers and screenwriter Stephen McFeely, so at least everyone involved has a proven track record with the MCU.
