Avowed’ Doesn’t Need 60 FPS Mode’ Says Obsidian

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that performance and visuals are two crucial aspects that make or break a game for me. After listening to Matt Hansen’s interview about Avowed, I’m pleasantly intrigued. Targeting 30fps might seem like a bold move in today’s high-frame-rate era, but as a first-person, single-player game, it makes sense.

In a recent chat, Obsidian clarified that the main aim for Avowed’s frame rate is to hit 30 frames per second on the Xbox Series X and S gaming systems.

As a passionate gamer speaking here, I’ve been eagerly following updates on Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming title, Avowed. During a chat with Iron Lords Podcast, Matt Hansen, their art director, shared some insights about the game’s performance. When quizzed about the console performance goals, he mentioned that the team is aiming for a solid 30 frames per second as a bare minimum. That’s music to my ears!

The developers initially intended for the game to run at 30 frames per second (FPS), and since it’s a single-player, first-person game, a higher 60FPS mode isn’t necessary. This could potentially mean the game will run at 30FPS on Xbox. What do you all think about this?💚🎮

Hansen mentioned that Avowed is primarily a single-player game from the perspective of one player, implying that players may not strictly require 60 frames per second (fps). In fact, Obsidian has opted to aim for 30 fps, enabling them to deliver more visually appealing graphics. They can make the visuals “much richer” with effects, lighting, and other aspects, according to Hansen. This is a strategic choice made early in development, and the game runs smoothly despite its visually dense nature, as stated by Hansen.

At Gamescom 2024, our lead editor was present for a live demonstration of Avowed. Despite witnessing intense battles filled with magical explosions and sword clashes, he didn’t spot any performance problems with the game. Although he mentioned that the traversal system could use some fine-tuning, overall, he found Avowed to be a robust and well-constructed game.
