2024 saw fewer blockbuster video game launches compared to 2023, but it still had a good number of significant titles. Interestingly, several of these major releases were scheduled for the latter part of the year, specifically fall and winter. Originally, Avowed was slated to be one of those late-year releases.
Initially, it was planned that game “Avowed” would be launched in Fall 2024. However, Xbox changed this schedule to February 2025 in August, explaining their decision as allowing players some space to catch up with their backlogs. This choice appears shrewd, considering the release of significant titles such as “Silent Hill 2”, “Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred”, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6”, “Dragon Age: The Veilguard”, “STALKER 2”, and “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” within the original release timeframe for “Avowed”. However, that alteration in competition isn’t the only advantage of delaying “Avowed”.
Getting Avowed to 60FPS Was Worth The Delay
Avowed Breaks a Recent Xbox First-Party Pattern
The Xbox Series X, while it can theoretically render images at 120 frames per second (FPS), typically operates at a lower frame rate for many of its top games. In fact, several Xbox first-party releases over the past two years have included a 30 FPS mode for consoles as their default setting. Games like Redfall, Starfield, and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 are instances where this is evident.
Prior to their release, creators of these games argued that maintaining a 30 frames per second (FPS) rate provided the optimal blend of technical efficiency and visual appeal. However, this consistent frame rate often sparked criticisms among some gamers. Interestingly, for Redfall and Starfield, an update allowing 60 FPS gameplay was introduced post-launch, alleviating some player complaints, even though it didn’t address all the concerns raised about each title.
Originally, Avowed was almost among those unlucky first-party titles for Xbox. Last August, Matt Hansen, Art Director at Obsidian, revealed that Avowed aimed for a minimum framerate of 30FPS, stating they were content with the visual impact considering the game’s rich environments. However, right before Avowed’s early access debut, it was announced that Xbox Series X players would have a 60FPS “Performance” mode available to them.
Initially aiming for a frame rate of 30FPS prior to its planned Fall 2024 launch, it appears that the game’s delay provided Obsidian with sufficient time to enhance the game’s performance, allowing it to run smoothly at 60FPS from the get-go.
Avowed’s Performance Mode Makes Its Combat Even Punchier
Essentially, having the 60FPS Performance mode in Avowed is a fantastic addition that gives the entire game a contemporary feel. However, the advantages of 60FPS are particularly apparent during battle scenes.
In its combat, Avowed truly shines, boasting a level of responsiveness and weight that outclasses many other first-person RPGs. A significant part of this responsiveness is due to the game’s animations and visual feedback, making enemies visibly react when struck by a melee weapon, spell, or gunfire. While 30FPS suffices for Avowed‘s combat, a 60FPS frame rate offers a significantly more fluid experience with noticeably smoother animations. The more polished those animations are, the more responsive and dynamic the combat in Avowed feels.
