Avowed’s Placement on the Timeline Explained

Avowed's Placement on the Timeline Explained

As a seasoned gamer with years of immersion in the rich tapestry that is the world of Eora, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as I eagerly await Obsidian Entertainment’s latest offering, Avowed. While the shift from isometric to first-person gameplay may seem like a radical departure for some, for me, it feels like stepping into a familiar world from a new perspective – much like meeting an old friend in a different outfit at a party.

The forthcoming game from Obsidian Entertainment, titled “Avowed“, marks a significant shift for the broader series that originated with “Pillars of Eternity“. Instead of sticking to the isometric CRPG style, it promises a first-person action RPG adventure. Although the gameplay footage of “Avowed” might appear dissimilar when contrasted with its predecessors, it retains the same world-building and lore that characterizes Eora, the universe on which this series is based.

The lore spanning across the globe, initially set within PoE, encompasses a history thousands of years older than the occurrences depicted in the game itself. All the content associated with this series thus far appears to be geared towards advancing the chronology, and Avowed is no exception to this trend. However, following the world-altering climax at the end of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, some enthusiasts might find it surprising to discover that Avowed happens so soon after the conclusion of that game.

The Timeline Set Up by the Pillars of Eternity Duology

Thousands of Years Led Up to the Events of Pillars of Eternity in 2823 AI

The history of Eora has been richly textured with countless significant occurrences that have yet to be visually portrayed. This history spans more than 15,000 years of prehistory, a period instrumental in molding the unique cultures across each continent and fostering conflicts between them. From the mythical creation of deities by the Engwithans around 600 Anno Iroccio to the emergence of the Aedyr Kingdom in 2200 AI, which later transformed into Avowed’s Aedyr Empire in 2399 AI after a war with the elven kingdom of Kulklin, the backdrop for the events in 2823 in PoE is a complex tapestry woven by various political agendas as world powers rose and exerted their influence over time.

2828 AI Was the Most Recent Year as of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire

As a gamer, I’d say that, compared to the grand timeline woven throughout history, Deadfire unfolds just after the first game, and the reappearance of the god Eothas from Caed Nua ties the two narratives together neatly. However, the sequel’s setting in the Deadfire Archipelago gives it a sense of isolation that sets it apart. Despite the profound impact of Eothas’ actions and the shattering of the Pillars of Eternity, most folks in Eora seem blissfully unaware of these events due to the vast geographical gap.

Avowed is Set During the Latest Period in Eora Yet

What Taking Place a “Few Years After the End of Deadfire” Could Mean

Based on comments made by Carrie Patel, director of Avowed, during an interview with Game Informer (now unavailable), the game is set just a few years after the second Pillars title. This timeframe, roughly 2830 AI, would still be characterized by dealing with the aftermath of the Watcher and Eothas’ actions in Deadfire. However, since the protagonist of Avowed is investigating a plague and the game doesn’t necessitate prior knowledge of the lore, the events of Deadfire may not significantly influence the narrative unfolding in the Living Lands.

Being Set Within the Living Lands Provides Avowed with Healthy Distance

As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of Avowed, knowing that it might not dive headfirst into continuing the narrative from where Pillars left off. Instead, it seems to be carving out its unique space within the expansive world of Eora. Rest assured, there will likely be nods to the events in the previous game, but the fresh start for a new segment of this IP makes Avowed an ideal opportunity for it to explore its own distinct perspective.
