Avowed’s Premise Shares a Major Similarity with One Other Obsidian Title

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen and played it all – from the early days of text-based RPGs to the modern, immersive worlds we see today. When it comes to Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming masterpiece, Avowed, I can’t help but feel a sense of familiarity.

I’ve been eagerly anticipating my next big adventure in the world of RPGs, and that’s none other than Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming masterpiece, Avowed. This game has certainly generated a lot of buzz within our gaming community, and with a 2025 release date set for February 18, it’s not hard to see why.

One key attraction of the upcoming game Avowed lies in its connection to the broader Pillars of Eternity series, first introduced in 2015. Being set within the PoE universe, it’s no surprise that many are already making comparisons between Avowed and the previous games from this franchise. However, to truly grasp what awaits players in terms of narrative, they might find a glimpse in another Obsidian Entertainment title – Tyranny, released in 2016. This RPG shares many plot similarities with the storyline that has been hinted for Avowed.

Obsidian Entertainment Seemingly Laid the Groundwork For Avowed’s Story in 2016’s Tyranny

Following the debut of the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian Entertainment unveiled Tyranny, another critically acclaimed RPG. Similar to the Pillars of Eternity games, Tyranny offers an isometric view and incorporates a multitude of conventional role-playing game mechanics like combat and storytelling. Although Tyranny doesn’t directly connect to the Pillars of Eternity universe, it served as a valuable foundation for Obsidian, drawing upon similar mechanics and themes from the initial release of Pillars of Eternity, significantly impacting the development process of 2018’s Pillars of Eternity 2.

In the story of “Tyranny”, you assume the role of a Fatebinder, a prominent figure with judicial and enforcement powers within the realm of Terratus, under the rule of Kyros, an enigmatic but omnipotent ruler who remains unseen. Kyros dispatches the Fatebinder to Vendrien’s Well, a troubled region, due to a disagreement among his military leaders over suppressing a rebellion.

In Tyranny, players assume the role of the Fatebinder, who uncovers an unexpected talent: the ability to tap into some of Kyros’ immense, feared power. This discovery places the player in a critical position, where they can potentially shape the destiny of the world of Terratus, whether for its betterment or destruction. The game emphasizes the player’s control over a complex, branching narrative, with every action and choice made by the player affecting not only the main storyline but also elements like their standing among others and the fate of various factions.

Avowed and Tyranny’s Protagonists Seem One and the Same

It’s quite likely that the narrative style seen in Avowed could find its way into the gameplay, given the strong resemblance between the known story elements of the two games and Tyranny. For instance, similar to Tyranny, the plot of Avowed revolves around a player-character serving as an envoy for a powerful empire’s leader, with the character in Avowed being under the command of the ruler of the Aedyr Empire.

In the game ‘Avowed’, the main character embarks on a royal mission to locate the origin of a devastating pestilence ravaging The Living Lands, serving as the foundation for all significant occurrences within the game. Although it has minor variations from ‘Tyranny’, it is worth mentioning that the protagonist in ‘Avowed’ is an entity resembling a god, boasting immense magical powers and genetic links to primordial deities. This aligns with the inherent magical aptitude that the Fatebinder in ‘Tyranny’ eventually develops, suggesting that both games share similar frameworks for their protagonists’ roles in their respective fantasy realms. While ‘Avowed’ will undoubtedly carve its unique narrative path, enthusiasts eager to catch a glimpse of its storyline can explore ‘Tyranny’ as an early sneak peek into the lore it will partly embody, with the sequel set for release in early 2025.
