Okay, I’m a bit surprised but really excited! It looks like South of Midnight, which was originally an Xbox exclusive, is now coming to PlayStation 5 and the new Nintendo Switch 2! The announcement happened right as the game finally won its first award at The Game Awards 2025. That’s awesome news for anyone who doesn’t have an Xbox and was hoping to play!
Compulsion Games, the studio behind We Happy Few and Contrast, has released South of Midnight, a dark fantasy action adventure set in a Southern Gothic world. The game launched on April 8th for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass, receiving mostly positive feedback. Critics gave it an average score of 77 on OpenCritic, and over two-thirds of the 157 reviewers recommend it.
South of Midnight Announced for PS5 and Switch 2 at TGA 2025
At The Game Awards 2025 on December 11th in Los Angeles, South of Midnight received the Games for Impact award. Compulsion Games’ Diane Guillemont and Farah Brixi accepted the award and then announced that the game will be released on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 in spring 2026. While South of Midnight was also a finalist for the Innovation in Accessibility award, Doom: The Dark Ages, another Xbox game, ultimately won that category.
What the Critics Have Been Saying About South of Midnight
Players with a Nintendo Switch 2 or PlayStation 5 can look forward to South of Midnight, a new Xbox game praised for its beautiful and immersive world inspired by Deep South folklore. Reviewers especially liked its compelling story, striking visuals, and gameplay that doesn’t waste your time. The main complaint was that the combat, while satisfying, could become repetitive due to happening often. On average, players will likely spend about 10 hours finishing the main story, and around 20 hours if they aim to complete everything.
South of Midnight Continues Xbox’s Multi-Platform Publishing Push
As a big gaming fan, I’m really excited to see Microsoft continuing to bring their games to more platforms! It’s been happening for a while now, starting back in early 2024, and it’s awesome news for South of Midnight, which is coming to both the PS5 and the new Switch 2. Plus, we’ll be able to play Halo: Campaign Evolved on the PS5 in 2026 right when it launches! Forza Horizon 6 is also heading to PlayStation, though we might have to wait until 2027 for that one after it initially releases on Xbox Series X/S.

Compulsion hasn’t announced how much the new versions of South of Midnight will cost. Like the first game, it will be published by Xbox Game Studios. If the price stays consistent across all platforms, the standard version will likely sell for $39.99 on both PS5 and the new Switch 2. A more expensive ‘Midnight Premium Edition’ will probably be $49.99. This pricier version doesn’t add any new gameplay content, but it does include digital extras like an art book, the game’s soundtrack, a comic book, a music video, and a behind-the-scenes documentary.
