The developers of *Baby Steps* realized early on that the game needed to stay simple and avoid becoming overly complicated with too many systems. They’ve rightly prioritized perfecting the core walking mechanics, which have been a key focus of the game’s promotion. But even without considering *Baby Steps* specifically, the team generally prefers to avoid making games with unnecessarily complex features, as Boch explained.
From the beginning, we’ve avoided making the game overly complex or cluttered, and we’re not fans of styles that feel excessive or outdated.

Baby Steps’ Core Gameplay is Rightly the Focus
With games growing in size and technology constantly improving, there’s been a trend towards adding increasingly complex features and systems. It’s now common to see open-world games packed with RPG elements, but more isn’t always better. Ultimately, a strong core gameplay idea should be enough – you don’t need extra layers of complexity, according to Foddy.
It’s easy when creating a large open-world game to want to add lots of extra features to make it feel more complete. Many big games do this – they include things like gathering materials, crafting items, managing resources, unlocking parts of the map, long questlines, collectibles, fast travel, and ways to improve your character’s abilities. But we felt our game was already fun and complex enough without all of that. That belief really shaped the entire design – we deliberately avoided adding unnecessary systems and features.

The developers clearly believe in the idea and fun gameplay of *Baby Steps*, and they’ve worked hard to make the experience smooth and easy to pick up. Players who want a bigger challenge can find more difficult routes by exploring. If the team continues to deliver, this game has the potential to be a standout indie title in 2025.
