Now, the company responsible for it aims to create another big impact with their latest endeavor.

In a similar vein to other successful toy lines before it, Bakugan capitalized on its distinctive designs to build a comprehensive media empire. This expansion led to an unprecedented surge in the popularity of the toy line and the brand overall. The epitome of this success story was the anime-style series, “Bakugan Battle Brawlers,” which premiered in Japan and major English-speaking regions during the late 2000s. This show, which was centered around the toys, experienced remarkable success in boosting toy sales as well as its own standing. As a result, it spawned multiple seasons and two separate reboots. The brand’s popularity even reached such heights that it secured a Switch-exclusive game release in collaboration with Nintendo.

The popular Bakugan animated series, now streaming on Netflix, is about to venture into unexplored realms, as a live-action adaptation of the franchise is under development. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spin Master, the IP holder, is spearheading this project and has enlisted veteran Canadian filmmaker Brad Peyton for production and direction, along with co-writing the script with Lindsay Harbert. Excited about this opportunity, Peyton stated, “Bakugan is ripe for a cinematic adaptation, and I’m elated to be the one to debut it on the big screen for the first time. With Lindsay and the Spin Master team supporting me, we are eager to develop a franchise that appeals worldwide. I am confident that we will create an unmissable film event that captures the extraordinary and epic world of Bakugan.” Known for his diverse portfolio, Peyton has previously collaborated with Netflix and Dwayne Johnson, the WWE Superstar turned Hollywood actor, most recently in Disney’s Moana live-action remake.

Spin Master is involved in numerous ventures, one of which is a profitable collaboration with Sony for creating PlayStation toys. They’ve also made an announcement about a future live-action project, with Spin Master president Jennifer Dodge stating, “We’re excited to team up with talented filmmakers like Brad to reimagine Bakugan in live action, broadening the franchise for our original fans and introducing it to new audiences worldwide.” A live-action series would likely appeal more to longtime fans of the original show, and advancements in technology have made it easier to bring the show’s elaborate battle system to life. Although the IP may not be as popular as it once was, waiting this long could be a strategic move since the production requires a significant amount of work that now has more established precedent.

In addition to this, Spin Master isn’t new to the film industry; they’re also part of the Paw Patrol franchise that’s set to release its third movie in 2026. This collaboration between Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount, known for large-scale intellectual property movements like the Star Trek film series, could potentially be another success if a live-action adaptation gains popularity as its animated version did in the late 2000s.
