Balatro 1.1 Update Delayed Indefinitely

The lone developer, LocalThunk, has shared some disappointing news: the anticipated 1.1 update for the popular poker-themed roguelike deck-builder game, Balatro, which was originally scheduled to launch in 2025, will not be released on time. Ever since its debut in February 2024, Balatro has become a captivating obsession among many players. Now, due to unforeseen circumstances, the release date for the game’s first major update remains uncertain.

In August 2024, LocalThunk unveiled plans for a free upgrade to Balatro version 1.1, expected to be rolled out to all players in 2025. The developer hinted that the update would bring new tactics and concepts into the roguelike genre, possibly introducing more distinct Jokers as well. This news sparked excitement among fans, who were eager to see how the game would evolve and what fresh content could be expected. However, the creator of the game has recently shared some slightly disappointing news about the update’s release – a development that longtime fans are taking in stride due to the reasoning behind it.

LocalThunk Says Balatro 1.1 Will Be ‘Done When It’s Done’

In a recent blog update, LocalThunk announced that the anticipated 1.1 version of the game Balatro will not be released in 2025 as initially planned but will instead be completed “when it’s ready.” The developer revealed that he endured burnout following the launch, balance adjustments, and mobile release of the game, prompting him to take a break. He shared his feelings about returning to work on Balatro gradually, stating, “I still find joy in sketching my quirky characters, but the idea of hurrying the process and diving back into demanding work conditions just didn’t sit well with me.” The developer clarified that the 1.1 patch is still underway and will remain free for players across all platforms. He also emphasized his hope that it won’t be the final update. With a humorous touch, LocalThunk closed the blog post by acknowledging that he has obtained every Balatro achievement, which makes him eager to do so again once the 1.1 update is live.

The phenomenal success of the poker-themed roguelike game, Balatro, is undeniable. By January 2025, it had sold more than 5 million copies and garnered multiple awards such as Best Independent Game, Best Debut Indie Title, and Best Mobile Game at The Game Awards 2024. However, LocalThunk, its creator, hadn’t anticipated Balatro to become so popular, admitting that he initially made it for a small group of friends as a pastime.

In July, renowned Doom developer John Romero expressed his thoughts on Balatro, stating that it demonstrates how some of the most outstanding games in recent years have come from independent studios. Furthermore, he mentioned Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a game that is currently being widely recognized as a strong candidate for Game of the Year in 2025.
