Ball x Pit is My New Roguelite Obsession, and It Just Got Even Better on Switch 2

As a huge fan of roguelites, I’ve been spoiled for choice in 2025 with amazing releases like Hades 2, Absolum, and Cloverpit. They all nail that addictive “just one more run” feeling, but lately, I can’t stop playing Ball x Pit. It looks deceptively simple at first glance – some might even think it’s just another Brick Breaker clone – but Kenny Sun’s game is so much deeper. It’s got base building, economic strategy, and unique ways to play depending on which character you choose, which really sets it apart. And if you’re playing on the Nintendo Switch 2, it’s honestly even better.

This week, Ball x Pit launched an updated version for the Nintendo Switch 2. If you already have the game on the original Switch, you can download the upgrade for free from the Nintendo eShop. The new version will replace your current copy, but you won’t lose any of your saved progress.

What’s New for Ball x Pit on Nintendo Switch 2?

  • Improved frame rate (up to 90fps) and resolution (1080p)
  • Saves carry over
  • Free update on Nintendo eShop

One of the main selling points of the new Nintendo Switch 2 is that it offers improved versions of existing games. These upgraded versions feature smoother gameplay with higher frame rates, sharper visuals with increased resolution, and enhanced graphics. Specifically for the game Ball x Pit, the upgrade focuses on making the handheld experience better by increasing the resolution to 1080p and the frame rate to 60 frames per second.

I’ve played Ball x Pit both on the Switch screen and connected to the TV, and I haven’t seen a big difference when played on the TV. However, it runs much better and looks cleaner when played in handheld mode. While the game already has a retro style, so the improvement isn’t as dramatic as you might see in a game like a potential Nintendo Switch 2 version of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s still a welcome improvement for anyone who plays on the go. Ball x Pit is a really great game to play when you’re out and about.

Ball x Pit Feels Like This Year’s Balatro – An Addictive Roguelite

It’s hard to get a true sense of what Ball x Pit is like just from watching videos. Your initial attempts might be frustrating, and it might take a little while to understand the game, but it starts to become clear once you begin unlocking upgrades and building up your base. New characters and evolved balls constantly introduce fresh challenges and ways to play, keeping things interesting. Plus, with each run lasting around 15 minutes, it’s easy to pick up and play in short bursts.

It’s incredibly rewarding to watch your progress in each run. Unlike some similar games, you rarely feel like you’re wasting your time, even if things aren’t going perfectly. Seeing your stats increase and your bouncing projectiles effectively clear out enemies is instantly satisfying. Plus, even when replaying the same levels, the game stays engaging because you can always set smaller goals for yourself.

Ball x Pit is a fun game to have on while you’re doing something else, like watching a long baseball game. It’s easy to play because you mostly just move your character around.

Once you really start playing Ball x Pit, it’s easy to get hooked. You’ll find yourself wanting to play “just one more time” to achieve different goals. While the main goal is unlocking new levels, there are tons of smaller things you can focus on during each run. You might want to speed up time to gather resources, level up a character to unlock their special abilities, or unlock new blueprints to improve your builds.

Since each session is quick, it doesn’t feel like a big commitment. This often leads to doing more sessions than originally planned.

Ball x Pit is the Perfect Handheld Game and a Match Made in Heaven for Switch 2

Taking Ball x Pit on the road makes an already fantastic game even better. While a dedicated mobile version is likely coming, it’s perfect to play right now on handheld gaming devices like the Xbox ROG Ally X or a Nintendo Switch (or Switch 2). I’ve easily passed the time on flights, in cars, and while waiting for appointments with this game. Often, whatever I’m doing ends before I’m ready to stop playing Ball x Pit, and I find myself looking forward to the next chance to jump back in.

Similar to last year’s Game of the Year winner, Balatro, Ball x Pit might not look very interesting at first glance. However, if you play it, you’ll quickly discover how surprisingly deep and addictive it is.

I initially chose the Nintendo Switch to play this game because it felt perfect for on-the-go gaming, and I was right to do so, even before the Switch 2 was available. Now, with the Switch 2 upgrade, the game looks and runs even better in handheld mode, making an already great experience truly exceptional.
