As a seasoned gamer with a rich history of gaming milestones under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation when it comes to Bandai Namco’s recent financial success. The 56% profit growth in Q1 and the staggering $725 million digital sales, largely fueled by Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, is nothing short of impressive.
Bandai Namco Entertainment recently disclosed their Q1 FY25 financial report, showcasing a remarkable 56% rise in earnings and substantial growth in both net sales and profits throughout the initial quarter.
Originally, the corporation anticipated a total revenue of around $6.9 billion (equivalent to approximately ¥1.08 trillion) and profits amounting to $520.3 million (approximately ¥81 billion) for the fiscal year 2025. This initial projection also accounted for the company’s financial outlook. However, despite underperforming during its first quarter, the corporation has not altered its overall expectations. Instead, it has adjusted its predictions for the period ending September 30th this year.
As a seasoned investor with years of experience under my belt, I have learned that companies occasionally need to adjust their financial expectations due to various factors such as market conditions or unexpected events. In my personal experience, I have seen numerous instances where these revisions can significantly impact a stock’s performance in the short term.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Acts As Revenue Catalyst
Last year, the digital entertainment sales of the publisher experienced significant expansion, jumping by a massive 55.8% compared to the preceding year, amounting to an impressive $725 million or approximately ¥106 billion. A considerable portion of this growth can be attributed to the launch of FromSoftware’s Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
As a devoted fan, I felt like Bandai Namco was unveiling an entirely new game when they announced the expansion for Elden Ring. The marketing strategy was strikingly reminiscent of how they promote a full-fledged title.
There was a lot of excitement within the company for the upcoming launch, as they considered this project to be their biggest expansion effort yet. They felt that it surpassed the usual boundaries of additional content, as its scale rivaled that of numerous independent games.
The game titled “Erdtree Shadow” debuted in both digital and tangible versions, aiming to expand on the original game’s achievements. Within just three days after its launch, an impressive 5 million copies of “Erdtree Shadow” were sold worldwide, positioning it as a strong contender for one of the year’s top-selling games in 2024. However, despite this success, there were initial doubts among fans regarding the game’s performance.
The expansion in our business wasn’t solely due to FromSoft games. Instead, it was primarily driven by robust sales within our entertainment division, which experienced a significant jump of 17%, amounting to approximately $25,760 or ¥33 million compared to the previous year.
Last fiscal year, which was FY24, Bandai Namco experienced a downturn in sales for two consecutive years, particularly in their digital entertainment sector.
In the year 2024 (FY24), strong sales were recorded for games such as Armored Core 6 and Tekken 8, along with earnings generated by its mobile applications. Yet, digital sales did not meet their projected targets.
The buzz and sales for “Shadow of the Erdtree” have dropped off since its initial launch. If Bandai Namco doesn’t have another game in the pipeline with potential for comparable commercial success like “Shadow of the Erdtree,” they can still depend on their strong Toys and Hobby sectors, which continue to shine.
