As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark and gritty world of Gotham City, I can confidently say that Batman: Arkham Shadow is a masterpiece that pays homage to its predecessors while carving out its own unique identity.
Previously, the character of Carmine Falcone was merely referenced, while his son Alberto appeared in a scene where Penguin tormented him. It’s quite engaging to note that Bruce Wayne interacts with Carmine several times during the game “Shadow,” sometimes as Batman and other times as Malone. This is a contrast to his statement in “Origins” that he doesn’t require the Falcones in his debt. Moreover, given Carmine’s significant role in the established narrative of Harvey Dent’s transformation into Two-Face, it seems fitting that he assumes such a crucial role in “Batman: Arkham Shadow.” However, it turns out that Carmine may not have been directly involved in Harvey’s metamorphosis into Half-Charred.
Experiencing moments like this in Batman: Arkham Shadow is what makes its complex narrative so captivating and fulfilling. The story provides as many answers as it poses – exactly what one would hope for in a lore-rich universe – without assuming its position within the timeline lightly. The timeline of the Arkhamverse has often been unclear at best, with only a handful of specific dates and time spans shown, like holidays or Batman confirming that two years pass between Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham Knight. However, it’s no coincidence that Shadow feels like a heartfelt tribute to Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate.
Batman: Arkham Shadow Completes a Blackgate Trilogy Epic
Batman: Arkham Shadow serves as an excellent follow-up to both Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, linking characters and storylines across all three games. What’s particularly noteworthy is that each of these games was developed by different studios, and they don’t share the same gameplay genre perspective. Additionally, being close together in the continuity’s timeline, with a gap of just three months between them, allows these installments to make clever references to previous events, ensuring they remain consistent and true to their respective histories.
Shadow moves forward with District Attorney Harvey Dent, Dr. Leslie Thompkins, and Otis Flannegan’s Ratcatcher, but its narrative is closely linked to the characters and settings from Origins and Origins Blackgate, serving as an expansion of their mood and character progressions while lingering within their ominous shadows.
In numerous aspects, this holds true, yet what stands out most is the strategic and engaging selection of characters that emerge throughout the story. Among these are Ricky “Loose Lips” LeBlanc, a captivating adversary frequently encountered by Batman; inmates from Blackgate Penitentiary like the counterfeiter Chucky Berks or the trickster Robert Hanes; Howard Branden, initially a corrupt GCPD SWAT Lieutenant but now a crooked TYGER CO official; Bird, who loyally serves Bane; and even Ferris Boyle from the Cold, Cold Heart DLC. Similar to Berks and Hanes, many of Shadow’s Blackgate inmates are named minor antagonists players encounter as suspects in crime scene investigations during Batman: Arkham Origins, such as Andrew Carter, a man grappling with withdrawal from Venom who sits beside the player in a court-mandated group therapy session.
These character appearances might not hold significance for individuals who haven’t played Origins or Origins Blackgate, especially if they don’t recall the less prominent characters from those games that date back a decade. But, for fans who appreciate the continuity between the Arkham series and enjoy spotting these familiar faces, it’s a delightful surprise to encounter them again after having previously apprehended them.
Batman: Arkham Shadow Shines a Well-Deserved Bat Signal on Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate
Simultaneously launched with its counterpart, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, hasn’t garnered nearly as much attention as its companion game, Batman: Arkham Origins. While
It’s unfortunate that Origins Blackgate doesn’t receive as much love as other games, especially considering its unique feature: it was the one to introduce the initial meetings between Batman and Catwoman in the Arkham series. While the story of Origins Blackgate may not be as intricate as others, it has a special charm with its 2.5D Metroidvania style side-scroller format.
In the game “Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate,” Bronze Tiger makes his debut, finding himself unexpectedly tossed into an arena for a boss battle. Encountering him again in “Blackgate” during “Shadow” provides another delightful continuation.
Shadow is overflowing with thrilling guest appearances that aren’t focused on legendary, widely recognized super-villains, although characters like Joker, Black Mask, and Firefly can be interacted with in solitary confinement if desired. This helps it to maintain a level of respect for the games preceding it in the timeline. It also adheres to the established lore from Asylum, City, and Knight, doing so seamlessly while also questioning certain ambiguous aspects within the Arkhamverse, such as the specifics of how Harvey Dent sustained his severe chemical injury.
In essence, playing Batman: Arkham Shadow significantly enhances one’s comprehension and enjoyment of the narrative and characters found in Origins Blackgate. A follow-up game would need to replicate the meticulous attention and dedication displayed by Shadow towards Origins and Origins Blackgate to maintain the same level of immersion for fans who cherish these two games.
