Batman: Arkham Shadow, Silent Hill 2 Remake Share a Love of Nostalgia

As someone who’s been a dedicated Bat-fan since the days of Adam West and Burt Ward, I must say that these recent releases have truly brought a smile to my Bat-loving face. The surprise drop of “Batman: Arkham Shadow” was a delightful treat, not unlike finding a hidden Bat-cave in broad daylight.

The game titled “Batman: Arkham Shadow” was unexpectedly released a day earlier than scheduled on October 21st. Similar to previous Arkham games, Shadow skillfully upholds the Arkhamverse mythos and cleverly incorporates plot twists. Abundant with Easter eggs and lore details, Batman: Arkham Shadow goes to great lengths in its storytelling to create intricate references to Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, while also writing a daring and original chapter in the Arkhamverse.

At the opposite spectrum of the video game remake world, Bloober’s reimagining of Silent Hill 2 has achieved a level of success that few recent remakes have managed. This remake is both homage and departure in various aspects, and yet, Bloober is deliberate about highlighting the iconic moments they’ve changed, even if it lessens the game’s immersive experience. Interestingly, this approach has been echoed in Batman: Arkham Shadow as well, with both games sharing a common element: a blatant tribute item purely for fan appreciation.

Glimpses in Bloober’s Silent Hill 2 Reflect the Remake’s Source Material

In other words, the flashbacks in the Silent Hill 2 remake subtly reference images and occurrences from the initial game, especially when the remake strays most noticeably from its foundation. These flashbacks will hold no importance or value for those who haven’t played the original Silent Hill 2 before experiencing the remake, but they are enjoyable for fans of the original game who were hoping to see familiar scenes recreated accurately.

In the beginning, a significant moment is often recalled by players, where they first encountered a deceitful character. This happens when a particular camera view persists and a distinct sound effect is played.

Initially, it might be perplexing as to what’s happening here, whether anything is taking place at all. Those unfamiliar with the original game may find themselves bewildered, while seasoned players will likely recognize that the first enemy encounter has been relocated in this remake. Later on, there are instances that recall aspects of the original game, such as the Brookhaven Hospital rooftop fence where Pyramid Head pushes James Sunderland or the old moral noose riddle in Toluca Prison. These moments seem like tributes to the source material, even though Bloober has chosen to reimagine these scenes differently.

Echoes in Batman: Arkham Shadow Connect Its Lore Between Origins and Blackgate

In the game “Batman: Arkham Shadows,” the eleven Echoes of the Past aren’t ordinary collectibles like patient records, Rat King idols, or radio transmissions. Instead, these Echoes are more like snippets of memories that include audio clips from the previous games “Batman: Arkham Origins” and its spin-off “Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate.” These events transpired just six and three months before “Batman: Arkham Shadows,” respectively. The first Echo that players can discover is located when they soar down into the heart of Gotham City, specifically the Bowery district.

Despite all the bustling activity, such as Gotham Cinema being on fire, the Bank of Gotham being closed up, and an intriguing payphone from Shadows, it’s hard to miss LeBlanc’s Echo bubble situated in the street corner. This spot brings back humorous recollections for Bruce and Alfred about their frequent encounters with the Santa hat-wearing character, Loose Lips.

A reminder of past events is triggered when the Joker boasts about his achievements given such little time, during the storyline of ‘Origins’. At the same time, Bruce recalls his training to combat not just common criminals, but monstrous figures like Bane and the Joker, due to an allusion to their past encounters. These echoes could have been unnecessary for fans if not for how they prompt reflections in Bruce, adding depth to these moments. This connection ties well with the games that came before ‘Shadow’ in the timeline, giving them relevance.
