Batman: Arkham Shadow’s Rat King Presents a Way Forward for Batman Games

As a long-time Batman fan who has followed the Arkham series since its inception, I can confidently say that Batman: Arkham Shadow has surpassed all my expectations and then some! The VR platform was initially met with skepticism, but the team at Camouflaj proved us wrong by delivering an immersive experience that felt like I was actually patrolling the streets of Gotham.

Following about a decade of absence, the highly anticipated Arkham series returned with the much-anticipated release of “Batman: Arkham Shadow“. Contrary to initial apprehensions about being the sole VR-exclusive Arkham game, it has been met with tremendous acclaim. Fans had yearned for another addition since 2015’s “Arkham Knight“, and the team at Camouflaj certainly didn’t disappoint. They not only demonstrated that an Arkham game could function on a VR platform, but also showed that even after four flawlessly executed Batman games, the Arkham series still has some innovative moves up its sleeve.

As I eagerly awaited the premiere of “Batman: Arkham Shadow”, I found myself engrossed in the buzz surrounding the enigmatic villain known as the Rat King – a fresh character conceived exclusively for this game. While familiar faces like Gordon and Harvey Dent were confirmed to make appearances, it was the elusive Rat King who stole the show in both promotional materials and the final product. Though his true identity remains a mystery, I can’t help but feel that the Rat King could hold the key to unlocking the future of Batman video games.

The Rat King Mystery Gives Batman: Arkham Shadow a Mysterious Edge

Why Arkham Shadow’s Rat King Twist Works So Well

In the game Arkham Shadow, the creators at Camouflaj introduced the tale of The Rat King as an entirely new idea. While it echoes some storyline elements found in a few iconic Batman adventures such as The Long Halloween, the narrative predominantly stands on its own. The enigma surrounding who the Rat King truly is keeps players captivated for much of the gameplay duration. And when the grand unveiling occurs, it feels like a skillfully crafted and genuinely deserved plot twist.

The Rat King mystery inevitably draws comparisons to the bemoaned Arkham Knight twist in the last game. On paper, they sound exactly the same: an existing character in the Batman mythos adopts a new masked identity and wreaks havoc while Batman tries to stop them and piece together who they are. The main difference is that the Rat King reveal has been largely well-received and the Arkham Knight twist is still met with eye rolls nearly a decade later.

The reason for this is that the Arkham Knight twist is nearly a 1:1 adaptation of Under the Red Hood, maybe one of the most famous Batman stories ever. Arkham Shadow‘s originality is one of its biggest strengths; it takes enough cues from existing Batman adventures to be familiar, but it’s not afraid to try new things to keep fans guessing. Characters and/or identities like the Rat King are the key to keeping Batman games exciting and preserving Arkham Shadow‘s freshness moving forward.

Batman’s Rouges Gallery May Be Too Familiar to Regularly Keep Up Long-Running Mysteries

Batman’s arch-enemies are well-known figures in comic books, but their popularity might be working against them now. As Batman is known as the World’s Greatest Detective, crafting an engaging mystery becomes challenging when readers have a clear understanding of each villain’s background and patterns from numerous stories featuring characters like Joker, Two-Face, Riddler, and others over several decades.

Allowing characters to disguise themselves with fresh, uncommon tricks – such as the Rat King or Arkham Knight – enables developers like Camouflaj to create tense narratives in which players can team up with Batman as detectives to solve mysteries. Additionally, whispers suggest that Rocksteady may return to Batman games, potentially rectifying the disappointing twist in Arkham Knight and improving upon the flawed Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League experience.

It’s not necessarily that Batman tales can’t maintain an engaging plot with traditional characters. For instance, Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” managed to keep audiences gripped even though it was clear from the beginning that the Riddler served as the main villain. Similarly, Rocksteady and writer Paul Dini succeeded in telling one of the most acclaimed Batman stories of the past decade without introducing any new characters in “Arkham City”. Instead, they crafted a fresh and thrilling narrative using established rogues and members of the Bat Family.

But it’s really not fair to expect every single Batman game to be an Arkham City. Sometimes a new character concept like Rat King is exactly what a story needs to give it a jolt of new life and fresh energy. And there can be no denying that there’s a certain satisfaction in solving a mystery alongside the World’s Greatest Detective.
