As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement over the recent episode of Creature Commandos, which featured none other than the legendary Batman! In the original script, it seemed like a more detailed and imposing version of the Dark Knight was planned, one that apparently gave creator James Gunn quite a scare.
In simpler terms, the sixth-to-last episode of “Creature Commandos” was released on Max on January 2, 2025. This episode continues the story of “Task Force M,” a squad similar to Amanda Waller’s Suicide Squad, led by Rick Flag Sr. This animated series is well-liked by DC fans due to its numerous appearances of DC characters like Clayface, Gorilla Grodd, Wonder Woman, Flash, and even Shaggy from “Scooby-Doo”‘s Monster Inc. The season finale is set for release on January 9 and will include the first post-credits scene in the DC Universe, with a second season already confirmed.
James Gunn Wasn’t Ready for the Levels of Commitment After Seeing “A Lot More” Batman
In episode 6 of the series “Creature Commandos,” titled “Priyatel Skelet,” we delve into the heartbreaking past of Dr. Phosphorus, a member of Task Force M. Towards the close of the episode, a fleeting image of Batman is seen atop a club in Gotham, following an abrupt power outage, which coincidentally occurred shortly after a scene featuring Dr. Phosphorus and his henchmen celebrating. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes on YouTube, James Gunn shared that the initial version of this Batman scene was much more elaborate, but he felt he wasn’t prepared for such extensive involvement at that time.
Initially, when it was handed over to me, there was an abundance of Batman scenes. However, I expressed my reluctance to fully embrace this, stating repeatedly, “I’m not ready, I’m not ready.” Consequently, I requested more subtle hints, saying, “Give me more shadows, more shadows, more shadows.
Gunn also mentioned that he viewed the situation as an excellent opportunity to solidify Batman’s status as a recognized character in this world, rather than retelling another origin story, much like how David Corenswet’s Superman and other supporting superheroes will be portrayed in the upcoming “Superman” film. However, what really piqued fans’ interest was the director’s intriguing suggestion of a project that could involve Batman and Superman together, as he said, “I can’t wait for people to see more of him [Batman] alongside Superman.” If this comes to fruition, fans might finally witness an adaptation of DC’s beloved “World’s Finest” comics.
In the brief glimpse of Batman in the Creature Commandos, it’s apparent he was responsible for locking up Dr. Phosphorus, but it also sparked questions about which version of Batman this is and how old he might be. The silhouette provides a hint, suggesting short ears and the classic blue-and-grey bat suit, helping to answer the first question. This sneak peek increases anticipation for Andy Muschitetti’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold DCU project and the upcoming Clayface movie, as they are now tasked with introducing Batman and establishing the tone for Gotham in the DCU. Eager fans will undoubtedly watch closely for any additional surprise appearances that might be hidden in the post-credits scene of the Creature Commandos‘ season finale.
The initial six episodes of “Commandos Creatures” are available now on Max, and the final episode will air on January 9.
