Amongst a multitude of Stephen King adaptations, Osgood Perkins’s upcoming horror movie, “The Monkey,” has already caught attention and stirred anticipation, even before its release. Now, the esteemed science fiction and horror writer is expressing his views on this intriguing film.
According to JoBlo’s report, King shared his enthusiasm for the movie titled “The Monkey” on his social media account Threads. So far, fans have been treated to a spooky teaser, a bone-chilling trailer revealing additional details, and a clip that is both dark and violent. It’s known that the plot revolves around twin brothers Bill and Hal, portrayed by Theo James, who uncover the sinister nature of a toy monkey.
King wrote on his Threads account:
In my experience as a film enthusiast, there’s nothing quite like ‘The Monkey’. It’s an extraordinary spectacle that pushes the boundaries of sanity – and I mean this as a compliment. At times, it dives headfirst into the absurd, and I must admit, I have a soft spot for such bold creativity.
As a film enthusiast who loves Stephen King’s work, I always get excited when I hear that one of his stories is being adapted. Ever since the iconic release of “Carrie” in 1976, there has been no shortage of King adaptations each year – some hitting the mark and others falling a bit flat. Over the years, we’ve seen our fair share of misses, such as the underdeveloped TV series “Under The Dome” and the perplexing “In The Tall Grass.”
However, it seems that there are more King adaptations in development now than ever before! Mike Flanagan is currently working on a new “Carrie” TV show, as well as “The Dark Tower” and a movie based on the short story “The Life of Chuck.” It’s always reassuring to know that Stephen King approves of a project before it hits the screens, and I’m thrilled to hear that he’s on board with “The Monkey.
Previously, King has always been open about his feelings towards films based on his cherished tales. In an interview with American Film Magazine back in 1986, he expressed his dislike for the 1984 adaptation of Firestarter, stating that it was “devoid of flavor; it’s like bland cafeteria mashed potatoes.” He further explained that there were certain special effects in the movie that didn’t make sense to him at all.
According to King and Perkins’ remarks, it’s evident that The Monkey is a story with both somber and humorous aspects. Notably, Perkins not solely wrote and directed The Monkey, but he also has a minor role in the production. This accomplished actor, known for his roles as Young Norman Bates in Psycho II (1983) and Fynn Bachman in Nope (2022), shared with IGN that he’s participating in the project too.
My upcoming film is titled “Stephen King’s The Monkey,” but don’t be fooled by its name, it’s actually a comedy! In this movie, I will portray an unpleasant uncle who takes in the children. I only have a few scenes, but they are enjoyable nonetheless.
The film version of ‘The Monkey’ is set to hit theaters on February 21st, 2025, based on Stephen King’s short story first published in 1980. It’s thrilling to see so many of King’s stories being brought to life as movies. There are certainly other King tales that deserve similar treatment. Preliminary feedback suggests ‘The Monkey’ could be a blockbuster, and let’s hope for more Stephen King adaptations in the upcoming years.
